The psychology of new information/data is deep. It often takes physical stimulus to engage the parts of psyche to help assimilate the new data when it is too shocking to the foundations of the data structure you are so used too.
This is why alien race just popping in on another species would be so decimating to that species.
Fear, turmoil, the physical body would just go haywire. Many would be hospitalized 99%.
