Catholic means Universal. The Roman Catholic Church is not part of the universal body whether Roman Catholics claim it or not. Catholic Church has never been good. God knows a persons heart though and the simplicity that is in Christ has probably saved many that grew up within Catholicism.

Check our Eusebius' book Ecclesiastical History. It's collections of early Christian writings up until the Council of Nicea. Very clear Constantinople was seeking a way to control and manage the fast spread of real Christianity( The Way ).
