WTO to Look at China Bid to Target $7Bln Worth of US Imports – Source
BRUSSELS (Sputnik) - The World Trade Organization will consider China’s bid to target $7 billion worth of US imports in a years-long trade row, a source in Geneva told Sputnik.
"The WTO arbitrator will look at the Chinese request for reciprocal measures against US imports," the source at the Swiss-based body said.
The trade dispute goes back to 2013 when China complained to the WTO about the US use of certain methodologies in anti-dumping probes into its products. Beijing said the measures violated WTO rules.
In 2017, the United States said it intended to implement the Dispute Settlement Body’s recommendations. In January 2018, that period of implementation was set at 15 months, expiring on August 22. On September 9, Beijing accused Washington of failing to comply.
Earlier, a Chinese commerce ministry official expressed concern regarding Washington's possible withdrawal from the WTO's Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights.
This comes amid an ongoing trade war between China and US with President Donald Trump placing 10 percent tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods which are to be enforced on September 24.

Tesla's Vice President of Global Supply Management has reportedly resigned from the company. Liam O'Connor, who came to Tesla from Apple in March of 2015, has become the latest in a deluge of executive departures from Tesla this year. O’Connor may have been one of the employees intimately involved in trying to manage the company's ballooning payables, which grew to over $3 billion last quarter.

Salvini To Migrant Rescue Ship “Go Wherever You Want, But Not To Italy”
Migrant rescue ship Aquarius, which three months ago was at the centre of a row between Italy, France and Spain as to where it could unload hundreds of migrants rescued at sea, was today seeking a safe haven for 11 migrants it says were saved off the Libyan coast again.
The rescue vessel said it moved in to save ten men and an unaccompanied minor from a sinking boat after trying to alert Libya's coastguard on Thursday morning. The migrants are said to be from Pakistan and Ivory Coast.

‘Transphobic’ student editor fired for insisting ‘women don’t have penises.’ He’s not backing down.
A student from the United Kingdom has been called “transphobic” and fired from his editor position at a student publication after supporting on social media the notion that “women don’t have penises,” Metro reported.
Angelos Sofocleous was assistant editor of Durham University’s philosophy journal, Critique, for just three days when he lost his job for sharing a Spectator piece titled, “Is it a crime to say women don’t have penises?” on his personal Twitter account. His tweet has been deleted, the outlet said.
He also was “forced” to resign as president-elect of Humanist Students, Metro said, and was let go from his post as general editor the school’s online magazine, The Bubble.
The former chair of LGBT Humanists, Christopher Ward, took issue with Sofocleous’ post, the outlet said, arguing it was “factually incorrect” and not “worthy of a debate.”
“The opposition I experienced from a number of longstanding Humanists members to trans people and trans issues was a stain on an otherwise great organization,” Ward wrote, according to Metro. “And here’s the new president of Humanist Students RTing horrific transphobic s**t.”
Not backing down
But Sofocleous blasted his detractors, saying in his Humanist Students resignation statement that they “cannot tolerate any criticism, either of their movement or their ideas, and are unable to engage in a civilized conversation on issues they disagree on.”
“These are individuals who think they hold the absolute right to determine which ideas can be discussed and what language can be used in a public forum,” he added.

I was surprised by the lack of willingness to engage in a discussion upon the issue by current and former members of the organization — members that otherwise promote freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and an environment in which ideas and opinions can be debated and challenged. Living in a free society and being present and active in a public forum means that one often witnesses comments that she may judge as offensive, divisive, or derogatory. Living in a democracy means that one will often offend and get offended. That’s the price one pays for being a member of a democracy and not existing into her own bubble.

Winning The War On Drugs? Colombian Cocaine Output Soars To Record Levels
Colombia is producing more cocaine now than it ever has, according to a new report by Bloomberg. The amount of land planted with coca shrubs is up 17% last year, rising to 171,000 hectares, which surpasses levels prior to US president Bill Clinton’s "Plan Colombia" counter-narcotics program.
Almost all of the world's cocaine comes from Colombia, Bolivia and Peru. Colombia produces more than half of the total cocaine in the world. Under Clinton’s plan, the aid provided to Colombia over the course of the last six decades was "stepped up dramatically". Colombia has repaid the world by cranking out record levels of cocaine - probably not the solution Clinton, or other advocates for aid-giving, were seeking.
Colombia's 171,000 hectares is enough raw material to produce 1,379 tons of cocaine, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. It’s also more than triple the output of five years ago.
