INTERESTING FUN FACT and certain irony for current times
11/17/1734 John Peter Zenger was arrested ( yes arrested) for libel.
John Peter Zenger wrote articles in the The New York Weekly Journal critical of the Governor of New York about things such as rigging elections, allowing the French enemy to explore NY harbor, and an assortment of crimes. John Peters basically labeled him an idiot.
John Peter used a pseudonym of "Cato"
He drew a tremendous amount of attention to his paper for the subjects he wrote about. Everyone "woke up" thanks to him and his news paper.
He was tried for THE CRIME and it took a jury ten minutes to acquit him after his lawyers used the defense of " Truth is an absolute defense"
Freedom of the Press and future libel laws were born from this landmark case.
Today we have nearly the opposite fact pattern but, WE ARE The New York Weekly Journal of today's time waking people up with TRUTH.
