Not everyone still follows this custom. It's kind of shitty. The way it should work is H+W keep their original surnames, male children take dad's name and female children take mom's name. That way both names and lineages (patrilineal and matrilineal) can be preserved to a greater extent and the woman doesn't have to update dozens of documents and constantly correct people on her new name etc. etc.

Yes, because the woman's name basically gets deleted like it was never important and she alone has to deal with changing her name and all the hassles that come with it. If that custom is simply ignored, both of those downsides are deleted instead.
