Something just dawned on me from an old movie I saw years back.

If anyone has seen Al Pacino in "Cruising" they'll know that handkerchief code has been something that's been used for a long time (at least since 1979). This scene briefly explains some of the code.

This of course relates to Podesta's Handkerchief email from Wikileaks. I'm putting up the email from reddit for context.
