The media answer is because he entered a sex offender treatment program.

My guess is to keep him alive, because he made a deal and is a witness. If the rumors are true about his laptop, then he's gonna need to be kept alive long enough to serve his purpose.

I thought about that too. Maybe also part of deal. I think the 'treatment' is a good cover to keep him protected. Being Huma's husband, i suspect he's got some good info. Think Trump administration will let that go to waste? I believe the answer is no. I also wonder where he will go to be safe when he gets out. So many people know.
