WATCH: Siblings of Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar support his Democratic challenger in scathing TV ads
Siblings of Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar, a Republican, are supporting their brother’s challenger, Democrat David Brill, in a series of scathing TV ads.
One ad begins with six people questioning the conservative Republican’s commitment to Arizonians. They are only identified by their first names and profession. At the end of the ad, they give their full names and say they are Gosar’s brothers and sisters.
The siblings spoke against him because “Paul’s political rhetoric in the last probably year and a half has gone from — to me — conservative into a place of hate and divisiveness,” Jennifer Gosar told CNN.
How did the congressman respond?
CNN read a statement by Rep. Gosar, which represented his response to the ad.
Those of my siblings who chose to film ads against me are all liberal Democrats who hate President Trump. These disgruntled Hillary supporters are related by blood to me, but like leftists everywhere, they put political ideology before family. Lenin, Mao, and Kim Jong-un would be proud. Not one of my siblings lives in Arizona and my opponent’s policies are out of sync with what Arizona wants and the country needs.
You can’t pick your family. We all have crazy aunts and relatives, etc., and my family is no different. I hope they find peace in their hearts and let go all the hate. To the six angry Democrat Gosars — see you at Mom and Dad’s house!
Jennifer Gosar responded by alleging the congressman “doesn’t really live in Prescott.”
“Well, Paul doesn’t really live in Prescott, so you know, that’s if we’re going to talk details, he needs to be careful. His residence, his primary residence is in Flagstaff, and I would suggest to you that an apartment in Prescott does not mean residence. So in that way, the very false things that people claim are the very things they’re guilty of,” she said.
Prescott is in Arizona’s 4th district, which Gosar represents. Flagstaff is in Arizona’s 1st congressional district.
David Gosar, a Wyoming attorney, told the Phoenix New Times on Friday that he and his siblings are not after publicity.
“None of us are doing this for publicity. None of us even want to do it,” David Gosar said.
Instead, they have becoming increasingly concerned about their brother’s career in Congress, he told the alt newspaper.
What sparked the family feud?
Gosar’s siblings became estranged form their brother, a four-term congressman, over what they call his “frequent conspiracy theorizing and hair-raising comments about immigrants,” the Phoenix New Times explained.
The eldest of 10 siblings, Paul Gosar has views his siblings don’t share. In 2014, Pete Gosar, one of the brothers, ran for governor of Wyoming as a Democrat, the report stated.
In contrast, the congressman is a loyal supporter of President Donald Trump.
The family feud exploded last October when Rep. Gosar suggested in an interview with Vice News that the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, North Carolina, was orchestrated by liberal billionaire George Soros, the report stated.
The ads were revealed at a fundraiser Thursday and are scheduled to air in the near future, according to the Phoenix New Times.
Gosar’s district is made up primarily of rural western Arizona and is generally not considered competitive in the November election.
“But the sharply personal ad is certain to generate attention for Brill’s campaign,” the news outlet stated.
