In order for the progressive to maintain their mental equilibrium, they need to ignore any reality that flies in the face of their belief system.

They cannot allow themselves to think about things that make them feel uncomfortable. The next stage is that they cannot think of the things which remind them of the things that make them uncomfortable which leads to the pool of things that they cannot think about getting larger and larger.

Being forced to ignore reality makes one functionally stupid.
