Poorly phrased on my part. "Common" people weren't using cellphones until 1994. Certainly no teenager would have a cellphone back then . As that movie depicts, only the uber rich had cellphones up until 1992-1994.

"Pagers" weren't even a thing back in 82 for common people.

Understood. But don't miss the bigger point on semantics.

A) $1300($300) in 1989 dollars was a fair junk of change and you were using it for work purposes.

B) I'm gonna assume you did NOT buy one for your teenage daughter to fuck around with.

In 198o's, people told their kids to keep change around to use public payphones in case of emergencies. Cellphones just weren't a thing like they are now.

C) The claim is that this was ((1982)) where a teenager girl had a cellphone, let alone a portable one??? The likelihood of that is near impossible no matter how rich her family was.

Even in 1987, Michael Douglas' character is using a portable cellphone to show how rich he is and how much extra disposable cash he has (That was the point of the entire movie.. excess)

Oh yes, I forgot about the Howard Hughes connection. Thanks for the reminder. Some anons might want increase their history on "the Plan" regarding this. Very interdasting stuff.
