Sandy is an internationally recognized design leader and advocate focused on creating inspiring, healthy places that add value through integrated sustainable design. A designer, programmer and planner, she works to integrate complex technical requirements into elegant design solutions – welcoming collaboration and skilled at building consensus among multiple stakeholders. A passionate design team leader, Sandy generates productive dialogue with client and consultant stakeholder groups through thought-provoking questions and creative group facilitation. She is one of the early green pioneers with over 25 years of experience designing and planning high performance buildings, campuses and urban neighborhoods – she has led the design of numerous high profile projects including places of learning, mission-driven workplaces, research laboratories, housing and mixed-use projects.
Sandy was one of the pioneering board members of the United States Green Building Council and the AIA Committee on the Environment, where she served as Chair in 2000 and 2001. She coauthored the seminal book, “The HOK Guide to Sustainable Design,” and teaches, lectures and serves on numerous peer review and expert panels. She is widely published in print and on the internet; serves on numerous expert panels and speaks often at conferences and industry events; her current research and writing focuses on sustainable design at the neighborhood scale.
