Trump And Erdogan Share Icy Exchange At U.N.

President Donald Trump and Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan won't be doing any handshaking, back slapping or chummy antics before photographers anytime soon. The two leaders reportedly engaged in a handshake and very brief and presumably icy exchange behind the scenes at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

There was also some diplomatic confusion during President Trump's address to the assembly, with Erdogan getting up and leaving the assembly hall during Trump's speech. This caused some reporters present to interpret the move as a snub; however, the Turkish delegation later clarified in a statement that Erdogan was preparing for his own speech, which followed Trump's in the official schedule.

According to Bloomberg the two shook hands out of site of reporters' cameras, but did not broach key tensions dividing the two NATO allies, as they encountered each other between speeches.

As Bloomberg reports, “Cordial” would not describe the current state of U.S.-Turkey relations. Trump unexpectedly doubled tariffs on Turkey in August as a dispute over the fate of Andrew Brunson, an American pastor detained in Turkey, remained unresolved.

Pastor Brunson, a 50-year-old evangelical pastor from Black Mountain, North Carolina was detained starting in 2016, and is undergoing trial in Turkey while under "house arrest" and is facing charges of espionage and aiding terrorist groups after being accused of cooperating with "Kurdish terrorists" and colluding with the Gulenist Islamic movement. He faces up to 35 years in prison if found guilty, and has now been in Turkish custody for two years.

Trump has made it a personal mission to free Brunson, issuing statements via Twitter condemning his detention. For example last July, Trump stated, while addressing the Turkish president directly: "A total disgrace that Turkey will not release a respected U.S. Pastor, Andrew Brunson, from prison. He has been held hostage far too long. Erdogan should do something to free this wonderful Christian husband & father. He has done nothing wrong, and his family needs him." Congress has also held up transfer of F-35 fighters which were set to be delivered to Turkey, citing its horrible human rights record and the detention of Brunson.

Though Trump took shots at various countries during his Tuesday UN address, Turkey was nowhere mentioned in his remarks. Meanwhile Erdogan underscored Turkey's growing alliance with Russia and his support for the Palestinian cause in a perhaps indirect shot at the recent White House decision to relocate the US embassy to Jerusalem and cut funding for UN Palestinian refugee aid.

Meanwhile Turkey's economy has suffered amidst the damaged ties with Washington, with the Turkish lira losing more than 45 percent of its value this year.

US, EU, Japanese Trade Ministers Agree on Need for WTO Reform - Joint Statement

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer in a joint statement with his European Union and Japanese counterparts agreed during a meeting in New York City that there is a need for the reform of the World Trade organization (WTO).

"The ministers shared a common view on the need for the reform of the WTO," the ministers said in a press release on Tuesday.

Lighthizer, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan Hiroshige Seko and European Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom also agreed to continue working together to maintain the effectiveness of existing WTO disciplines, the release said.

The ministers said as a first step toward reform they will co-sponsor a transparency and notification proposal for consideration at the next meeting of the WTO Council on Trade in Goods, the release pointed out.

The release also said overly broad classifications of development, mixed with self-designation of development status, inhibits the WTO’s ability to negotiate new, trade-expanding agreements and undermines their effectiveness.

Earlier on Tuesday, US President Donald Trump said during his address to the UN General Assembly that the world trading system needs to be immediately reformed, and some WTO members breach every principle on which the organization was founded.

Mexican Cartel Tunnel Discovered at California Border

The Mexican military, in coordination with the Baja California Norte State Preventive Police (PEP), discovered a narco-tunnel leading into California late last week.

The tunnel was discovered on September 20 in the rural farming community of Ejido Jacume, located in the outskirts of Tecate–across the border from Jacumba Hot Springs, California. The tunnel was discovered after security forces received an anonymous report about the location. Authorities found the remote property with a residential structure containing the tunnel. The illicit infrastructure was operational for at least two years, according to local media reports. Officials said two weapons were located inside the residence: one rifle, and one handgun. No arrests were reported.

The cross-border tunnel was the fifth discovered during the current administration of Governor Francisco Arturo Vega de Lamadrid as part of the “Cruzada por la Seguridad, Tarea de Todos” (“Crusade for Security, everyone’s task”), according to the governor’s office.

Breitbart Texas reported on several incidents in the northern border region of Baja California and the United States. Police discovered a major drug lab on August 25, resulting in the seizure of four tons of methamphetamine. A fentanyl drug lab was also recently found in nearby Mexicali, where 20,000 tablets were seized along with precursor chemicals. In April 2018, a sophisticated tunnel measuring approximately 740 yards from Mexicali to Calexico, California, was discovered by the Mexican Army and Federal Police.

Big Tech Engages in Massive Voter Registration Push Before Midterms

Big Tech companies, including Google, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat are encouraging their users to register to vote before the United States midterm elections in November.

On Tuesday, Google turned its search homepage into a call to action for voter registration to mark National Voter Registration Day.

“Google’s homepage features the company’s classic logo alongside red, white and blue campaign buttons that advertise registering to vote,” reported UPI. “Clicking on the logo will present users with basic voter information and how to register in each state. Midterm elections take place on Nov. 6.”

Facebook will also be reminding its users to register to vote through a partnership with TurboVote, and will inform users about each candidate’s ideologies.

“Prior to Nov. 6, Election Day, the social network is teaming up with TurboVote on an initiative to help people register to vote. Facebook said it helped as many as 2 million people in the U.S. register prior to the 2016 election,” explained Adweek. “Facebook also reminded users about its issues tab, which provides information on where political parties stand on various issues. On Election Day itself, people will see messages atop their News Feeds reminding them to vote.”

Meanwhile, Twitter will prompt users to register with pop-ups which also allow users to encourage their friends to register, and Snapchat will feature a “Register to vote!” button on their menu.

Other tech platforms are also trying to play a part in the midterm elections. Popular discussion site Reddit has a pop-up similar to Twitter, and ridesharing company Lyft has announced a “ride to vote” promotion to transport voters to elections.

UN Chief Urges 'Combination of Patriotism and Cosmopolitanism' After Trump Speech

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres today defended solidarity as President Trump emphasized sovereignty at the United Nations General Assembly, saying at a luncheon with Trump that a "combination of patriotism and cosmopolitanism" as seen within New York City is the best course of action as Trump advocates nationalism.

"President Trump, you are a proud American. I am, of course, beneath the cover of secretary-general of the United Nations, a proud Portuguese – proud of my country and proud of its people. And each one of you, distinguished heads of state and government, you are proud of your countries, of your peoples, of your culture, of your contribution to world civilization," Guterres said, comparing the heads of state to the audience at Hamilton in their feelings of patriotism.

"But we are also, all of us, citizens of the world, and we are also united in a cosmopolitan way by a common cause: the well-being of humanity," the secretary-general added.

Trump said in his luncheon toast that "the United Nations has this incredible potential to bring people together."

"I hope that eventually some of the other countries that we have conflict with, if not warlike conflict, trade conflict, other types of conflict, a lot of those problems will disappear, I think, by next year," he said.

Trump and Guterres had a private one-on-one meeting today, at which the White House said they "discussed their common interest in resolving some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including those related to proliferation, terrorism, and other threats to international peace and security."

In recent interview with The Atlantic, Guterres opined that "the soft power of the United States … is being reduced at the present moment."

“The United States is today involved in a number of conflicts of different natures—in relation to trade, in relation to other situations—and indeed that means that the … attraction of American society that was a dominant factor in international relations just a few decades ago is today less clear,” he added.

Today, in his speech to the General Assembly, the UN chief said the world is "suffering from a bad case of 'trust deficit disorder.'"
