You can have Cherokee heritage without being on the Dawes roll. The roll is a census of Cherokees who stayed on the reservation or openly identified with their Indian heritage. In an era when Cherokees were being forced to migrate to the western states, many would try to hide or "pass" as white, and were absorbed into the white communities, marrying white people, and fearing being "outed" due to the discrimination and possible exportation which would follow. Others, orphaned in the "Trail of Tears" chaos were adopted by white families, leaving their Indian heritage behind. Descendants of these "hidden" Indians are ethnically Cherokee and may have minority status, but will not be a member of the Cherokee Nation, and will not benefit from casino income or land grants.
