If not for the way this was handled by the Dems, especially the Rep and the Senator who received the accusatory letter, there would be no show trial underway that proposing to convict an individual in the court of public opinion for an offense that may or may not have sufficient evidence to have launched even a basic police investigation.
At the root of the problem is not that a woman has recalled, however imperfectly, an incident that may or may not involve an actual crime, that may or may not involve correct iden of an offender, is the race to judgement and the trashing of the rule of law.
If this was instigated, at the getgo, by political skeemers, then, it is they and their masters who are directly culpable for all that has followed.
I do think that this spectacle is in good part bungling. But I also understand that some individuals can count on other individuals to bungle such matters.
And that is where one must assess, at this point, the balance between coincidences versus plotting plots.
If there was a plan to undermine rule of law, to undermine the political process of judicial nomination hearings, to undermine confidence in the constitutional protections that express our heritage of law and order, it has been horribly effective this past couple of months.
