Changing major events and producing a desirable alternative outcome is more difficult than you might think. Stopping JFK's assassination might have kept him alive another day, but what then? You've saved one life and who knows what changes might result, or how much further the cabal might go to kill him.
Stopping 9\11 would be a similar crap shoot–if you could even stop it, what would happen instead? You may save 3,000 lives, but maybe the cabal detonates a nuke in Los Angeles Harbor inside a Chinese shipping container instead. Far more casualties.

Keep in mind that John Titor did not come here to make changes to his own timeline–that would be impossible. He made a 1-way trip here to acquire a key piece of computer technology that was needed for recovery efforts in the 2030s of his timeline, many years after the nuclear war. For John, it was a one-way trip.
