They're trying to say that because he pointed out that he had to bust his butt so he could make the grades he wanted to achieve his goals, he was displaying the 'patriarchal fallacy' (read white privilege) that being competitive means having character. What he was really saying is that he was a total poindexter in school and not so much a party animal, but he tried to come off as one of the 'cool guys'. His calendar sort of shows by its very existence that he probably was NOT one of the cool guys.

Yes. I find it funny that a publication such as The New Yorker, which believes itself to be the epitome of sophistication, would attempt to pull off this sort of shit. But those 'superior' folks who read the drivel published by this rag will bob their heads and smirk knowingly and think they are soooooo far above the rest of us who 'just don't get it' because we aren't as intelligent as they. Gives me a chuckle.
