Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has addressed the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York City.

Addressing the UN on Friday, the Russian foreign minister criticized what he called "unilateral approaches" by some countries to a variety of complex global problems, ranging from the Middle East peace process to the Iran nuclear deal, commitments to the World Trade Organization, agreements on climate change, and more.

Defending the UN and other multilateral organizations, Lavrov warned of a "desire of some Western states to retain their self-proclaimed status as world leaders and to slow down the irreversible, objective process of establishing multipolarity. These powers do not hesitate to use any methods, including political blackmail, economic pressure and brute force," he said.

Syria

Turning to the Syrian conflict, the senior Russian diplomat warned that Syrian terrorists and their patrons may attempt new provocations using chemical weapons, adding that Russia would consider such efforts this "unacceptable."

"We warn terrorists and their sponsors that new provocations involving chemical weapons are unacceptable," Lavrov declared.

Commenting on the prospects for Syrian settlement, Larvov emphasized that the rebuilding of the war-torn country's infrastructure, and the return of refugees, must become the top priorities of international efforts, including at the UN, and must be implemented without any "double standards."

Israel-Palestine Peace

Turning to the Israeli-Palestinian issue, the foreign minister cautioned against a one-sided approach to the problem demonstrated by some powers. "Despite the complexity of the situation in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and Libya, we must not lose sight of the age-old Palestinian problem. A fair solution is crucial if we want the entire Middle East to recover. I want to warn against a one-sided approach and attempts to monopolize the peace process," Lavrov said.

"We will make every effort, including in the within the Middle East Quartet, the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Mutually acceptable initiatives must lay the groundwork for a peaceful and secure co-existence of the two nations, Israel and Palestine," the diplomat said.

US-Funded Report Illuminates Enormous South Sudan Death Toll But Leaves America’s Role in the Dark

The recently published, U.S.-financed report on South Sudan’s brutal conflict is just another dramatic illustration of how the U.S. publicly laments violence it has helped to create and perpetuate while obfuscating the sordid legacy of its foreign interventions.

A new report financed by the U.S. government on the state of South Sudan’s civil war has found that the conflict has resulted in the deaths of nearly 400,000 people since it began five years ago, indicating that past statistics had severely underestimated the death toll.

Yet, while the U.S.-funded report bemoans the situation in Africa’s youngest country, it fails to acknowledge the U.S.’ role in igniting the conflict, which largely resulted from the U.S.’ 2011 intervention in Sudan that led to the country’s partition and later to the current chaos that has now claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.

The report, published by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and funded by the U.S. Institute of Peace, revealed on Wednesday that at least 382,900 people in South Sudan have died as a result of the conflict in the country. About half of the deaths resulted from ethnic violence while the remaining deaths were caused by the increased risk of disease and reduced access to health care — underscoring the drastic effect the fighting has had on the country’s infrastructure.

The statistics provided in the report are astronomical compared to past estimates of the death toll resulting from the conflict, as past estimates claimed that the death toll stood at around 50,000. Yet, as the new report reveals, the actual death toll is more than seven times higher than past estimates.

Illuminating but leaving much in the dark

While the U.S.-funded report seems to be the first of its kind to more accurately record the massive toll the war has taken on the people of South Sudan, it unsurprisingly fails to acknowledge the U.S.’ role in perpetuating as well as creating the conflict.

Tories Select Former David Cameron Adviser to Stand Against Khan in London

A former adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron has been announced as the Conservative who will attempt to unseat London’s left-wing Mayor Sadiq Khan.

London Assembly member Shaun Bailey (pictured, above right, with current and former cabinet ministers) was declared the winner in a ballot of Tory party members in the capital and will stand against Mr Khan in his first electoral test in May 2020.

Mr Bailey, 47, has never won a seat in Westminster, despite attempts, and has a comparatively low national profile.

Right-wing supporters, however, point out that unlike other Tory hopefuls he supported Brexit, backed an immigration cap, and has promised a “zero tolerance” approach to crime.

London’s crime wave is likely to dominate the contest in 2020, and Mr Bailey has vowed to put 1,000 more officers on the streets, slash City Hall bureaucracy to free up more money for policing, and crack down on “Drill” rap music glorifying violence in the capital.

He has previously slammed Mayor Kahn for a “lack of leadership” and “failing” on crime, and said the rise in violent offences in the capital is because of the Mayors “choices” in office, not cuts.

Jamaican heritage Bailey said after being nominated: “I came from one of the poorest areas of London where I’ve seen the blight of crime on people’s lives.

“When we talk about social mobility of young people it’s impossible for them to move forward if they live in a crime-riddled environment.

“If you want to help people in London they’ve got to suffer as little crime as possible.”

Left wing papers have already attacked him for pushing cuts to public spending when he worked for Mr Cameron and even claimed he is guilty of “Islamophobia” for a Tweet he shared on Mr Khan in 2017.

ABC’s Moran: If Two Credibly Accused SCOTUS Justices Overturn Roe v. Wade, It Would Not Be ‘Legitimate’

Thursday on ABC’s special coverage of the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Supreme Court associate justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh, network chief foreign correspondent Terry Moran said if Kavanaugh is confirmed and the high court overturns 1972’s Roe v. Wade, it “would not be a legitimate action.”

Moran said, “This was no way to go about picking a Supreme Court nominee or adjudicating this charge.”

Referencing both Kavanaugh and Clarence Thomas, Moran continued, “Well he had better take into that lifetime appointment a sense of the woundedness of so many people in the country, and factor that in his decisions. I mean overturning Roe v. Wade by an all-male majority — two of whom have had credible accusations of sexual misconduct lodged against them — would not be a legitimate action. And that is the question of the Court, legitimacy. It has always had a very high place in the American popular opinion. And it could lose it if it loses legitimacy.”

Large Weapons Cache Seized Crossing into Mexico from Arizona

Mexican federal border inspectors and the Army seized a large cache of weapons crossing from Arizona Wednesday afternoon.

Mexican federal border inspectors manning the port of entry into Nogales, Sonora, conducted a random inspection of a 2003 Chevy Silverado pickup truck with California plates, according to local media. The driver later identified as Alfonso “N,” reportedly attempted to dissuade border officials from conducting an inspection but later yielded. Authorities say they discovered 24-semi-automatic rifles, 112 magazines, and 6,173 various caliber rounds of ammunition concealed within the bed of the truck.

The discovery of the weapons resulted in the deployment of the Mexican Army to assist with the investigation. Sonora is dealing with an escalation in cartel violence. A reported 21 killings were registered in nine days since the new municipal government administration was sworn in to office. The violence is caused by warring cartels seeking dominance over the border state which features direct smuggling routes into Arizona.

On September 14, police discovered seven heads abandoned in an ice cooler in the rural community of Bácum, Sonora. Another five homicides were recorded on September 21, one of which was captured in an audio recording. Additionally, the Mexican Army seized 1,055 pounds of methamphetamine last Friday near the Arizona border, on the outskirts of Caborca.
