New Bill Seeks to Bar Funds for US War on Iran Without Congressional Approval

Eight US senators have introduced legislation to prohibit the federal government from spending any money that could lead to war with Iran lacking the express approval of Congress, Senator Chris Murphy said in a press release on Friday.

"[The bill seeks] to prohibit the United States from expending funds that could lead to war with Iran without express approval from Congress, as required by the Constitution," the release said.

If passed, the Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act would restore to Congress the sole power to declare war by prohibiting any funding for an unauthorized attack on Iran and block the US president from provoking an unnecessary military conflict in the Middle East, the release said.

"There is no legal authorization for US troops to be fighting Iran in Syria or anywhere else, and yet this administration seems to be spoiling for a fight. Americans are sick and tired of endless, costly wars," Murphy said.

The legislation was being introduced on the same day that President Donald Trump chaired a UN Security Council meeting on nonproliferation, and following the US government’s rejection of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran, more commonly known as the Iran nuclear agreement, the release noted.

Split Within Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham Over Idlib Deconfliction Agreement – Report

An internal disagreement has emerged between the “moderate” and “radical” wings within Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leadership over accepting or rejecting the Russian-Turkish deconfliction agreement on the governorate of Idlib, the Syrian news outlet Enab Baladi reported on September 28.

A source familiar with the situation told Enab Baladi that the moderate wing wants to withdraw HTS forces from the demilitarized zone, which will be established around Idlib under the deconfliction agreement. However, the radicals within the group leadership are against this move.

In the interview, al-Buwaydhani also vowed to return to Eastern Ghouta and even to topple the Damascus government. American shame: US has nothing to teach the world about justice or politics after Kavanaugh farce

Many outside the US watched Thursday’s hearing with open-mouthed revulsion at the bad faith, lack of due process and inhumanity on display. Dysfunction in the biggest Western democracy sets a poor example to the rest of the globe.

The present does not own the monopoly on ugly scenes in Congress; the McCarthy interviews are on tape, after all. Nor do either of the parties – from Kenneth Starr’s ultimately futile humiliation of Bill Clinton, to their intransigence during Obama’s two terms, Republicans largely set the tone for the partisanship that reigns today.

But make no mistake about it: in the age of a hysterical and agenda-driven news media, and a social media that amplifies its worst aspects, the Kavanaugh and Ford testimonies marked a new low. And it is the Democrats that have guided the process into a high-stakes wrestling match in a toxic swamp.

Disagreeing with Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination on ideological grounds, and questioning his record and temperament are fine, even if it is to whip up your base before the upcoming mid-terms. This what the confirmation hearings were for (minus the choreographed interruptions from the gallery).

Wounded After Disastrous Election, Germany’s Merkel Forced to Plead: ‘I’m Still Alive’

Germany’s Angela Merkel, once hailed as the new “leader of the free world” by the anti-Trump left-liberal establishment, has been reduced to pleading she is “still alive” in front of an audience in Augsburg, Bavaria.

The nominally ‘centre-right’ politician, who has been in office since 2005, led her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party to its worst election result since 1949 last year.

Her unilateral decision to open Europe’s borders to at least a million migrants in 2015 unleashed chaos across the continent, and created space for the previously marginal eurosceptic, anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany (AfD) to carve out a place for itself in German politics.

The 64-year-old has only clung on to power by forming a ‘grand coalition’ with her supposed rivals in the left-wing Social Democratic Party (SPD), but her position has appeared increasingly precarious — with interior minister Horst Seehofer, who leads the CDU’s sister party in Bavaria, publicly threatening to walk away from her governing and forcing her to somewhat toughen up Germany’s borders.

It is against this backdrop that the embattled Chancellor told the Augsburger Allgemeine that “I’m sitting here alive and kicking, and I’m planning on keeping on with my work” — a statement few genuinely strong leaders would find themselves having to make.

Merkel’s most recent reverse was the ouster of her long-time ally Volker Kauder as leader of her party’s parliamentary group in a secret ballot — although she has so far resisted calls to submit herself to a vote of confidence in her leadership, and insists she will ask to remain as CDU leader when the party considers the question in December.

Polls suggest the public is weary of the veteran politician, however, with only 23 percent of of the public saying she has shown strong leadership in recent weeks, against 71 percent who do not — including 57 percent of CDU supporters.

Even Günther Oettinger, appointed to the EU Commission by Merkel in 2010, is now publicly denigrating the Chancellor as a “lame duck”.
