The 'Red October' plot which supposedly seeks to oust President Rodrigo Duterte could be the "last hurrah" of communist rebels, a ranking military official said Friday, as he sought to downplay the insurgents' strength.
"Iyong NPA (New Peoples' Army), paubos na 'yan. That is why Joma Sison is worried," said Brig. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr., the Armed Forces' deputy chief of staff for operations, at a news forum.
Still, Parlade said the NPA — the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines — is still a threat.
"To say that they are not a threat, I don't think so. It only takes one, two or three NPA [members] to sabotage a rally. We cannot really discount them, say that they are not a threat," he said.
Red October refers to supposed efforts to unseat Duterte by the communists, allegedly with the help of legitimate opposition groups as well as farmers, laborers and fisherfolks.
Sison is the founder of the National Democratic Front (NDF), the umbrella organization of all communist groups in the country.
