Looks like the cities of Sligo and Bossier City, Louisiana may be looking at many future cases of brain-eating amoebas. See my previous posts and these articles for helpful info. In short, if you know of someone who has come down with it, give the press release and journal article to the doctors involved. Until now, there have been no treatments for the condition and the patient almost inevitably dies.
These researchers have found several combos of certain cheap already-approved generic drugs that DO kill the amoeba, at least in petri dishes. "All 13 of the new drugs they tested were more potent than miltefosine, an investigational drug currently recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the treatment of primary amebic meningoencephalitis, in combination with other medications." One such combo is Tamoxifen and Prozac.
