California becomes first state requiring women to sit on corporate boards

California on Sunday became the first state to require publicly traded companies to have women on their boards of directors.

Gov. Jerry Brown (D) said in a statement to the California State Senate that he was signing the bill because "it's high time that corporate boards" include women.

“Given all the special privileges that corporations have enjoyed for so long, it’s high time that corporate boards include the people who constitute more than half the ‘persons’ in America," he said.

The bill requires publicly-held corporations in California to have at least one woman on their boards by the end of 2019. By the end of 2021, the bill requires corporations to have two women on their boards for boards with five directors and three women for boards with six or more directors.

Brown also wrote in the statement that “there have been numerous objections” to the bill and that “serious legal concerns” have been raised. But he added that “recent events in Washington, D.C.” and beyond made it clear that action was necessary.

“I don’t minimize the potential flaws that indeed may prove fatal to its ultimate implementation,” he said. “Nevertheless, recent events in Washington, D.C .—and beyond — make it crystal clear that many are not getting the message.”

Corporations that don't follow the bill's mandates could face fines from California's secretary of state.

'I STAND IN SOLIDARITY’: KAREN MONAHAN TOSSES SUPPORT BEHIND JUANITA BROADDRICK

A woman accusing Minnesota Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison of assaulting her when the two were in a relationship has come out in support of Juanita Broaddrick, who accused former President Bill Clinton of assault in the 1990s.

Karen Monahan, an activist who claims the Democrat assaulted her during a years-long relationship, tweeted support Sunday morning after Broaddrick demanded an “immediate FBI investigation against @keithellison for his assaults.”

“I am so sorry for what you went through. Thank you for being a voice for women around the country,” Monahan wrote in a Twitter post Sunday morning. “I stand in solidarity with you and survivors all around the world.”

Broaddrick, meanwhile, has been making the rounds in the media as she continues to harangue Democrats she believes are using the so-called MeToo Movement as a political weapon to harm Republicans.

“Ellison is leading the Democratic party right now,” she told The Daily Caller in a Sept. 27 interview. “He should be kicked out of office. Karen Monahan has 10 times the evidence that Dr. Ford does. Where is her hearing?”

SEN. KLOBUCHAR WON’T SAY WHETHER SHE WOULD PROSECUTE KAVANAUGH

Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Sunday avoided answering whether, as a former prosecutor, she felt there was enough evidence to charge Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh pursuant to the allegations against him.

“So, Senator, you used to be a prosecutor,” Tapper began. “As you know, as of now, with the evidence that we have, which is no corroborating evidence from the time, nobody who was at the party, being able to back the story … We know that the prosecutor the Republicans brought in, Miss Mitchell, has said that she would not have enough to take this case — to even get a search warrant.”

Then he turned the question on Klobuchar, asking, “Do you disagree with that assessment, as a former prosecutor?

Klobuchar sidestepped, saying, “First of all, I want to make clear this isn’t a criminal trial. And that, again, Kellyanne and I agree on that. This wasn’t a criminal trial. This is a job interview.”

She continued, turning the conversation away from the lack of evidence against Kavanaugh.

“What this is about is the dignity of the court, the dignity of the Senate and get to the bottom of the facts,” Klobuchar explained. “So, I haven’t looked at the evidence in that way because I haven’t been able to interview the witnesses that were there.”

China to cut import tariffs on wide range of products

BEIJING (Reuters) - China will cut import tariffs on textile products and metals, including steel products, to 8.4 percent from 11.5 percent, effective Nov. 1, the finance ministry said on Sunday.

Beijing has pledged to take steps to increase imports this year amid rising tension with some of its biggest trade partners, such as the United States.

Earlier in July, China reduced import tariffs on a range of consumer items including apparel, cosmetics, home appliances, and fitness products to fulfil pledges to further open China’s consumer market.

Import tariffs on wood and paper products, minerals and gemstones will be cut to 5.4 percent from 6.6 percent, the ministry also said in its statement.

Average import tariffs on over fifteen hundred products will be lowered to 7.8 percent from 10.5 percent, the ministry said.

“Reducing tariffs is conducive to promoting the balanced development of foreign trade and promoting a higher level of opening up to the outside world,” the ministry said .

China’s cabinet has announced plans to cut tariffs on machinery, electrical equipment and textile products beginning on Nov. 1, as the country braces for an escalating trade war with the United States.

The overall tariff level will be reduced to 7.5 percent in 2018 from 9.8 percent in 2017 as a result, the cabinet has said.

‘Deranged’ and ‘preposterous’: Divisions on show as Boris Johnson slams May’s Brexit plan

Tory MP and ex-Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson launched his latest offensive against PM Theresa May’s Chequers plan for Brexit, calling it “deranged.” His latest attack comes as party members meet for their annual conference.

Johnson, who dropped out of May’s cabinet in July over her Brexit plan, slammed May’s suggestion that the UK and EU could collect each other’s tariffs as “entirely preposterous,” in an interview with the Sunday Times.

The former top brass also argued that a Brexiteer politician would have got a better deal for Britain out of the negotiations, pointing to how he campaigned to leave while May was a staunch remainer.

“Unlike the prime minister I fought for this, I believe in it, I think it’s the right thing for our country and I think that what is happening now is, alas, not what people were promised in 2016,” he added.

Laying out his stall for leadership, he also pointed to how he had been twice elected mayor of London and could bring that same success to the rest of the country.
