Nobel Prize Committee Calls on Nominators to Give Up On Merits and Consider Diversity in Gender, Geography
The Nobel Prize Committee is no longer just concerned with the merits of your work â instead they are explicitly calling on nominators to âconsider diversity in gender, geography and topic for the 2019 prizes.â
Of the 605 people who have won Nobel Prizes in scientific discipline, only 18 have been women.
âIf a woman wins the Nobel Prize in Physics next week, she will be the first to do so in more than 50 years. Over the same period, just one woman has won in chemistry,â Elizabeth Gibney pointed out in her article for Nature.
Instead of encouraging more women to pursue science, or accepting that women perhaps just often prefer other fields â the Nobel Committee is nudging nominators to fix the perceived problems.
âWe donât work in a vacuum. We need the scientific community to see the women scientists, and to nominate those who have made outstanding contributions,â GĂśran Hansson, secretary-general of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences told Nature.
Hansson claims that the call for diversity isnât about lowering standards, but rather making sure that women arenât overlooked.
The gentle nudge isnât âradicalâ enough for some.
âThe smallest possible nudge can make a difference, so I praise them for that,â said Curt Rice, president of Oslo Metropolitan University and head of Norwayâs Committee on Gender Balance and Diversity in Research.
Rice isnât willing to settle for that, however, and is suggesting that nominators be forced to put forward equal numbers of men and women.
âOr the awarding bodies could, for a single year, decide to give all the prizes to women,â Rice also suggested.
Riceâs ridiculous ideas contradict Alfred Nobelâs will.
Nobelâs will stated:
âThe interest is to be divided into five equal parts and distributed as follows: one part to the person who made the most important discovery or invention in the field of physics; one part to the person who made the most important chemical discovery or improvement; one part to the person who made the most important discovery within the domain of physiology or medicine; one part to the person who, in the field of literature, produced the most outstanding work in an idealistic direction; and one part to the person who has done the most or best to advance fellowship among nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the establishment and promotion of peace congresses.â
The will made no mention of gender, race, or geographic equality. He wanted the best â period.
Lowering the standards or changing the game feels an awful lot like a soft bigotry of low expectations.

Death Toll From Indonesia's Earthquake, Tsunami Exceeds 1,200 People - Reports
The number of people who died in recent powerful earthquakes and a subsequent tsunami in Indonesia has exceeded 1,200 people, media reported.
Previous reports said that at least 832 people were killed in the disaster.
On Friday, the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi and was followed by two 5.8-magnitude tremors. A 6.5-feet tsunami struck the city of Palu and the Donggala area in Central Sulawesi Province shortly afterward.
The Straits Times newspaper reported citing the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB) that about 16,700 people have been displaced as a result of the disaster, while about 2.4 million people in Palu and Donggala will need humanitarian aid.
"Fuel, drinking water, medical personnel, tents, electricity, food and other essentials are urgently needed," BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Sunday as quoted by the media outlet.
The authorities of South Korea have pledged to allocate humanitarian assistance worth $1 million to Indonesia to support the country after the disaster. The European Commission has also released an initial $1.7 million in emergency humanitarian assistance to Indonesia.

New Jersey Man Killed By "Brain-Eating Amoeba" Prompting CDC Action
A person's worst nightmare, being eaten alive from the inside by a creature you can't even see, was realized in New Jersey. A 29-year-old man died this money after contracting what is being described as "a brain-eating amoeba". Fabrizio Stabile died one day after he was diagnosed with the brain-eating amoeba called "Naegleria fowleri", a rare infection that has only been diagnosed a total of 143 times in the last 55 years.
The amoeba is said to be found in fresh water, but Stabile had been at a wave pool at BSR Cable Park in Waco. After visiting the wave pool, Stabile began suffering from a headache while mowing his lawn. Later that day on September 16, he went to lie down and less than a week later he was pronounced dead on September 21.
The Naegleria fowleri amoeba typically infects people when contaminated water enters the body through the nose, according to the CDC. The parasite then travels to the brain after entering the nose where it can cause a fatal infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis. After one is infected, symptoms can start to show as soon as one to nine days later and within one to 18 days the infected person is dead.
At first, friends and family of Stabile weren't sure what he was suffering from. He took headache medicine on September 16 which helped him sleep through the night but when he woke up the next day, the headache was still there. A GoFundMe page set up for Stabile said, "He asked his mother for more medicine and went back to sleep. When his mother went to check on him in the early afternoon, Fabrizio could not get out of bed and could not speak coherently. His mother called 911 and EMTs rushed him to the hospital."
Stabile's symptoms included brain swelling and fever which appeared consistent with bacterial meningitis. Doctors immediately sedated and treated Stabile with an aggressive neurological protocol and medication. "Unfortunately, Fabrizio was not responding to these measures and his condition was rapidly deteriorating," the GoFundMe page says. "He had been tested for a multitude of illnesses caused by various bacteria and viruses, but the results were coming back negative or inconclusive."
On September 20, one of the test results came back positive for Naegleria fowleri and doctors brought his family and friends in the ICU waiting room to inform them of the bad news. The very next day, Stabile died at the Atlantic City Medical Center with his family and friends at his side, according to his obituary from Lowenstein-Saraceno Funeral Home.
Stabile is described as an outdoorsman who loved snowboarding, surfing, and anything to do with friends and family. He worked for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection as well as Bass Pro Shops. His obituary reads, "Fabrizio will be remembered as someone with a contagious smile, who could lift the spirits of anyone and everyone he talked to."
Friends of Stabile setup "The Fabrizio Stabile Foundation for Naegleria fowleri Awareness" to help inform people of the dangers of the rare infection. "We aim to do this through an annual fundraiser in Fabrizio's memory in hopes that this will not affect another familyâŚPlease help us in keeping Fabrizio's memory alive," the GoFundMe page said.

Infection of the Naegleria fowleri amoeba typically occurs when people go swimming or diving in warm freshwaters such as rivers and lakes. Infection can also occur in rare cases when contaminated water from other sources enters the nose, such as from inadequately chlorinated swimming pool water or heated and contaminated tap water. Between 2008 and 2017, there were a total of 34 reports of the amoeba infections in the United States.
Of those 34 cases, 30 of them were infected by recreational water. Three people were infected after performing nasal irrigation using contaminated water from the tap, and one person was infected by contaminated tap water which was used with a water toy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently testing the waters at BSR Cable Park's Surf Resort where the wave pool is located.
They are also testing where Stabile worked. A spokesperson for Waco-McLennan County Public Health District said the park has been closed pending the investigation. You can visit the GoFundMe for Stabile at the link below:

âKill Kavanaughâ Tops Twitter Search and Hashtag Suggestions
Typing âkillâ into Twitterâs search function currently returns a shocking result at the top of its search suggestions: â#KillKavanaugh.â Itâs also currently the third autocompleted suggestion in searches for âkiâ and the fourth suggestion in searches for âkâ as of this writing.
Thatâs right â by typing a single letter into search, Twitter is suggesting that its users might be interested in a hashtag about the murder of a federal judge and SCOTUS nominee.
The search suggestion was spotted by Instapundit earlier today and has been confirmed by Breitbart News.

It can be argued that some â but not all â of these tweets are metaphorical, calling for the nomination to be âkilledâ rather than the person, in the same way that a piece of legislation might be metaphorically âkilled.â But refusing to take action against those tweets would still be an example of Twitterâs double standards: the platform has in the past permanently banned conservative users when they employed similar metaphors, using the least charitable interpretation of their remarks. This is the website that has silenced James Woods for tweeting a meme about soy boys that Jack Dorsey and his San Francisco menagerie argue could âimpact an election.â
Twitter has in the past been slow or unwilling to address abusive or violent tweets against conservatives and Republicans. When the daughters of Islam critic Pamela Geller were bombarded with abuse earlier this year, Twitter did nothing. In fact, some of the abusive tweets remain on the site, undeleted. In 2016, death threats against sitting Republican senators were allowed to remain on the platform for weeks.
Meanwhile, Twitter continues to permanently ban top conservative commentators and activists simply for posting unwelcome facts, severely hampering the conservative grassrootsâ ability to mobilize supporters ahead of crucial elections.
Breitbart News reached out to Twitter for comment but has not received a response.
Avenatti on Kavanaugh FBI Investigation: âThis Investigation Is a Scam, Itâs a Sham and Itâs a Con Jobâ
During a Sunday interview on MSNBCâs âKasie DC,â Stormy Daniels lawyer Michael Avenatti weighed in on the FBI investigation into Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaughâs sexual assault allegations, calling it âa scam,â âa shamâ and a âcon job.â
Avenatti voiced his frustration with the FBI refusing to listen to his client, another Kavanaugh accuser, Julie Swetnick, despite his numerous requests.
âThis investigation is a scam, itâs a sham, and itâs a con job,â Avenatti told host Kasie Hunt. âWe know that because the White House is controlling who gets spoken to, who gets investigated and who gets interviewed.â

Still Lacking Evidence Of Sexual Assault, Democrats Now Want Kavanaugh Investigated For Perjury
Democrats still lack evidence to support sexual misconduct accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Democrats demanded an FBI investigation into the Kavanaugh accusations but many now claim that the FBIâs investigation is inadequate.
Some Democrats now want Kavanaugh investigated for perjury.
Still lacking corroborating evidence of disputed sexual misconduct accusations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, some Democrats now want Kavanaugh investigated for perjury in the latest iteration of their months-long campaign to derail his confirmation.
The perjury push comes as Democrats still lack corroborating evidence to support professor Christine Blasey Fordâs claim that Kavanaugh tried to drunkenly force himself on her while the two were in high school.
Other than Ford, none of the alleged party attendees â including Fordâs longtime friend, Leland Keyser â have any recollection of the event happening.
Two other Kavanaugh accusers similarly lack corroborating evidence for their claims.
Deborah Ramirez, Kavanaughâs former Yale classmate who accused him of drunkenly placing his penis in her face during college, was reportedly unsure if Kavanaugh was the perpetrator shortly before she came forward. No other eyewitnesses have corroborated her account.
Maryland woman Julie Swetnick accused Kavanaugh of being present while girls, including herself, were drugged girls in order to gang rape them. No other eyewitnesses have confirmed Swetnickâs account
Swetnick has previously been sued for sexual harassment and an ex-boyfriend of hers once filed a restraining order against her. Swetnick is represented by Michael Avenatti, the attorney for porn star Stormy Daniels who is weighing running for president as a Democrat in 2020.
Republican Senate leaders agreed to give the FBI up to a week to probe Ford and Ramimerzâs claims as part of an expanded background investigation into Kavanaugh, but some congressional Democrats are already saying that the investigation doesnât go far enough.
The House of Representatives âwould have toâ investigate Kavanaugh for perjury if he is confirmed without the Senate opening a new investigation for that purpose, Democratic New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler on Sunday told ABCâs George Stephanopoulos.
âWe would have to investigate any credible allegations, certainly of perjury and other things that havenât been properly looked into,â Nadler said.

US Interior Secretary: Naval Blockade is an Option for Dealing with Russia
The Interior Secretary proposed a naval blockade of Russia as a way to push Moscow out of energy market.
Speaking Friday at an industry event in Pittsburgh hosted by the Consumer Energy Alliance, US Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke said the US Navy can blockade Russia if needed in order to keep it from controlling energy supplies in the Middle East as it does in Europe.
"The United States has that ability, with our Navy, to make sure the sea lanes are open, and, if necessary, to blockade⌠to make sure that their energy does not go to market," Zinke said.
According to Washington Examiner, Zinke attended the event to explain why the technology of hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, and the shale energy boom has supposedly given the US an edge over its rivals Russia and Iran, by making the US less dependent on foreign sources of energy.
The Interior Secretary believes that the reason why Russia entered the Middle East is hydrocarbons trade.
"Russia is a one trick pony," Zinke said, stating that Russian economy depends solely on its ability to sell energy. "I believe the reason they are in the Middle East is they want to broker energy just like they do in Eastern Europe, the southern belly of Europe."
Answering the question on how the US should deal with Russia and Iran, Zinke said that "there are two ways."
"There is the military option, which I would rather not. And there is the economic option," he said. "The economic option on Iran and Russia is, more or less, leveraging and replacing fuels."
"We can do that because⌠the United States is the largest producer of oil and gas," Zinke added.
The US administration of Donald Trump has opposed new Russia's projects aimed at providing other nations with oil and gas, such as the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Trump on multiple occasions urged the US European allies to suspend the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which would run through the Baltic Sea to a hub in Germany, bypassing Ukraine. Washington, which is seeking to promote its LNG supplies to the European Union, has repeatedly expressed its opposition to the project, claiming that it was the means of political control used by Russia to exert pressure on the European Union. Washington has made a number of attempts to impede the implementation of the project and even incorporated a provision for counteracting the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in its Countering Americaâs Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.
The Nord Stream 2 is a joint venture of Russiaâs Gazprom with France's Engie, Austriaâs OMV AG, UK-Dutch Royal Dutch Shell, and Germany's Uniper and Wintershall. It aims to deliver 55 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas a year to the European Union.
