California extends Trump’s border mission by 6 months

SAN DIEGO — California Gov. Jerry Brown on Friday extended the state National Guard’s participation in President Donald Trump’s border deployment by six months, a low-key announcement that was made without any of the acrimony that characterized his early negotiations with the federal government.

The California National Guard said in a press release that the mission will now run until the end of March. It had been scheduled to expire on Sunday.

Money launderers are taking EU to the cleaners, experts say

EU nations may boast the world’s most stringent anti-money laundering rules, but recent scandals show that criminals are good at exploiting the bloc’s Achilles’ heel

Dutch banking giant ING axed its top financial officer following a scandal over the firm’s failure to vet clients for potential money laundering activities.

In March, Malta’s financial services watchdog froze the assets of Pilatus Bank after the bank’s chairman was arrested for allegedly circumventing US sanctions in Iran.

And in February, US authorities accused Latvia’s third-largest lender ABLV of large-scale money laundering with connections to North Korea’s nuclear weapons development programme.

Other European banking giants, including HSBC, Societé Generale and BNP Paribas have been fined millions of dollars in recent years for failing to put in place sufficient anti-money laundering controls.

“It’s a good sign that these cases are coming to light, but it remains a concern that the United States has to flag the problem,” said Brillaud at Transparency International EU.

Shutdown Averted, Congress Barrels Toward November

October 1, 2018 05:00 AM ET

The House passed a slew of tech and cyber bills last week, but Homeland Security’s top cyber priority is still waiting in the Senate.

Facebook Breach Prompts Warner Backlash

The Senate Intelligence Committee’s ranking member Mark Warner, D-Va., called for an immediate investigation Friday after Facebook reported a data breach that affected at least 50 million users.

“Today’s disclosure is a reminder about the dangers posed when a small number of companies like Facebook or the credit bureau Equifax are able to accumulate so much personal data about individual Americans without adequate security measures,” Warner said in a statement.
