National Disability Employment Awareness Month
Press Statement
Michael R. Pompeo
Secretary of State
Washington, DC
October 1, 2018
In October, the United States celebrates National Disability Employment Awareness Month. We recognize the creativity, innovation, and skill that people with disabilities bring to our workforce, and we rededicate ourselves to creating economic opportunity for all. U.S. workers are the engine of our economy. Our country is stronger and more prosperous because employers utilize the immense talents of individuals with disabilities, including disabled veterans.
We can all do more. Facilities should be fully accessible. Hiring practices should expand training opportunities and ensure our citizens have the knowledge and skills to compete and succeed in the 21st Century.
The State Department is committed to these efforts for our own workforce. They are integral to our foreign policy as we advocate for the universal rights and fundamental freedoms of the more than one billion people worldwide living with disabilities. With our partners and allies, we will continue to work to ensure that persons everywhere living with disabilities have meaningful, equal access to employment and to supportive workplaces. It is not only the right thing to do; our shared prosperity depends on it.

I reported on the illicit trade in human organs. Now people from all over the world email me trying to sell their kidneys
The first email came in January 2017 from a 27-year-old Bangladeshi man. Uncomfortable in English, he had managed to tap out five lines on his Samsung Galaxy phone. His opening line got my attention.
“Sir I’m sell my body one kidney.”
He had listed his blood type, A-negative, along with his phone number. The last line was a sad mash-up of words: “from Bangladeshi poor people money problem life.”

L.A. and Long Beach port truckers and warehouse workers begin strike
Truck drivers and warehouse workers who serve the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach began striking Monday morning in front of warehouses serving the ports, protesting the classification of drivers as independent contractors.
A primary picket line formed at 7 a.m. in front of XPO Logistics Inc. facilities in Commerce and San Diego and an NFI Industries Inc. location in Wilmington, said Barbara Maynard, spokeswoman for the Justice for Port Drivers campaign that is supported by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
