I haven't checked the Dalai Lama to get a read on him specifically, but CIA used Tibet as a listening post, they were deeply embedded there.

First, there's the men who were role models you grew up with, people who shaped how you had to act. I think besides picking what you're used to, in some case there's picking a situation that will resemble what is trying to be processed, to recreate something so you can change the script and make yourself whole. I think there's a biology of self-healing neurologically, but the system is too gamed for the most part to utilize it. Many women do get wise to it as they age.
From reading and thinking, it looks to me like men will psychology brand women, there's actually a bundle of neurons that hold the memory of that damage that form caused by being blindsided by some kind of abuse. This seems to create the need to be made whole by the source of the abuse. I could say more, that's a start.
The other thing is that life depends on being embedded in a social group, once you find yourself stuck with an asshole in a group, you have to leave your entire support structure to get away, a major task.
Men intentionally keep women in a high state of fight or flight, which makes it impossible to think rationally.
And last, society victimizes you if you're not with a man, you're seen as having no value. Or worse, open game for abuse.
Their modus operandi is moving by insensible degrees.
