Wikileaks: To Weaken Iran, US Undermined Democratic Elements of Syrian Opposition to Empower Radical Groups

A recently uncovered U.S. government document published by WikiLeaks has revealed that the U.S. directly advocated for undermining “democratic” elements of the so-called Syrian “revolution” of 2011 in order to ensure the dominance of authoritarian, sectarian Sunni groups within the Syrian opposition.

The document, written by the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Intelligence Department in late 2011, further asserts that empowering these radical Sunni groups over democratic and secular ones would be ideal for the United States and its regional partners, as ensuring the decline of the current Syrian government, and with it a secular Syria, would harm Iran’s regional clout.

In other words, the U.S. openly supported undermining democratic opposition forces in Syria in order to challenge Iranian influence and, with it, the influence of the Middle East’s “resistance axis” that obstructs the imperialistic agendas of the U.S. and its regional allies such as Saudi Arabia and Israel.

According to the document, which was buried in a previous WikiLeaks release and recently uncovered by journalist Dr. Nafeez Ahmed, U.S. military intelligence was well aware that the Syrian opposition movement in 2011 did not pose “a meaningful threat against the [Syrian] regime,” given that it was “extremely fractured” and “operating under enormous constraints.”

It also noted that “reports of protests [against the Syrian government] are overblown,” even though “the exiled [Syrian] opposition has been quite effecting (sic) in developing a narrative on the Syrian opposition to disseminate to major media agencies.”

That narrative — which was subsequently promoted by several foreign governments, including the U.S., the U.K., Turkey and France — falsely claimed that the protests were massive and involved largely peaceful protestors “rising up” against the “autocratic” government led by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

This document, as well as substantial evidence that has emerged over the last several years, shows that this narrative, of a “peaceful uprising” seeking to establish a secular and “democratic” Syria, has never been true, as even U.S. military intelligence knew that the reports regarding these “peaceful” protests were highly exaggerated.

Skripal is a ‘traitor & scum,’ not some rights activist – Putin

In a rare personal comment on the Sergei Skripal scandal, Russian President Vladimir Putin lambasted the former double agent as a “traitor” and “scum.” The sooner the media noise around Skripal ends, the better, Putin said.

Some media outlets are “pushing through a theory that Mr Skripal is some sort of a rights activist. He’s plainly a spy. A traitor to his homeland. There’s such a thing – being a traitor to the homeland. He is one,” Putin said on Wednesday, speaking at the Russian Energy Week International Forum in Moscow.

“Imagine, if there’s a person in your country who betrayed it. How would you treat him?” Putin added. “He’s plainly scum.”

Putin also said the whole Skripal affair had been blown out of proportion, adding that “the faster [the media campaign] ends, the better.”

Putin said that Russia has repeatedly urged the UK to provide Moscow with materials on the Skripal case, yet the requests have been squarely ignored. The Kremlin has said that the former double agent, poisoned in Salisbury with his daughter Yulia in March - after already serving a jail sentence in Russia, was of no real interest for Russia.

“This Skripal, as I’ve already said, is a traitor, who was caught, punished and who spent five years behind bars. That’s it. He went abroad and continued to cooperate, consulting some intelligence services there,” Putin added.

While London keeps blaming Russia for the Skripal incident, it is yet to provide any solid evidence to back up the claims. The Russian Foreign Ministry has sent some 60 notes to London since March, urging the UK authorities to conduct a joint investigation and provide consular access to the Skripal family, but the UK has not replied to any of the requests.

UN court orders Washington to lift Iran sanctions linked to humanitarian goods, civil aviation

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered the US to lift sanctions on Iran which are linked to humanitarian goods and civil aviation.

According to The Hague, the measures adopted by the US may endanger civil aviation safety in Iran and the lives of its users. These sanctions prevent Iranian airlines “from acquiring spare parts” and equipment, and prevent access to “maintenance, repair services and safety-related inspections” which are necessary for civil aircraft, the statement says.

Also, restrictions on the importation and purchase of goods “for humanitarian needs,” such as foodstuffs and life-saving medicines, as well as treatments for chronic disease or preventive care, and medical equipment, may have a serious impact on the health and lives of Iranians, the court concluded.The US “must remove any impediments” to the free exportation of foodstuffs and medicines to Iran, and to the safety of civil aviation, the statement added.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif called the court’s ruling “another failure for [the] sanctions-addicted” US and a “victory for the rule of law.”

Jewish Children's Singer/Songwriter Sentenced For Child Porn

Eric Komar is a children's singer/songwriter who performed in synagogues throughout New Jersey, or rather he was before he was convicted for receipt of child pornography. Komar, in addition to being a children's entertainer at Jewish community centers, camps, conventions and synagogues, was a music teacher. Last month after he was initially arrested Komar admitted that he masturbated to child pornography daily and had on multiple instances become aroused at and in the presence of a child.

Komar was sentenced to 82 months in prison for receipt of child sexual abuse images. Komar, 47, was a resident of Hillsborough, New Jersey. He had pled guilty to the charge of receipt. Between April and September of last year, Komar utilized a peer-to-peer file sharing program to download images of prepubescent children being sexually abused. Some of the images were specifically sadistic abuse.

After his prison term, he will be made to register as a sex offender and submit to 10 years of supervised release.

We recently became aware that Eric Komar, a singer-songwriter who has performed for children at synagogues, Jewish community centers, camps and conventions nationwide was arrested, by the FBI Child Exploitation Task Force, and charged with receiving and distributing child pornography. Mr. Komar most recently performed at Temple Shaari Emeth this past Saturday and was employed as a Teen Choir Director in the past. We were deeply disturbed to learn the nature of the charges. As with every Temple employee, a background check was completed before he was hired.

According toa study published in the academic journal Child Abuse & Neglect, compared to the general population in the US, the "history of involuntary penetration was greater among formerly (but not presently) Orthodox Jews (OR = 3.00)." In Brooklyn's Haredi Orthodox community an epidemic of child abuse was finally uncovered stemming from religious leaders and teachers. As in the case of child abuse in the Catholic Church, the findings were initially suppressed and in this case Brooklyn police even intimidated witnesses and encouraged members of the community to shun victims who spoke out. It's possible this is one factor explaining why the numbers of reported sexual abuse in the 2018 study were higher among "former" Orthodox Jews.

Apple CEO: Government needs to step in and regulate privacy

While insisting that he is “not a pro-regulation kind of person,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the free market has failed to provide adequate protections for privacy, and he believes it is time for the government to step in.

Here’s what you need to know

During an interview on HBO’s “Vice News Tonight,” which aired on Tuesday, Cook said:

I’m not a pro-regulation kind of person. I believe in the free market deeply. … But I think you have to recognize when the free market doesn’t produce the result that’s great for society. You have to ask yourself: What do we need to do? And I think some level of government regulation is important to come out of that.

Cook did not elaborate on what he thought this regulation might look like. However, he conceded that Congress’s understanding of this topic was “a challenge,” and that tech companies would have to help Congress “come up to speed on what’s possible.”

Privacy, Cook argued, is “one of the most important issues of the 21st century” and “central to liberty.”

“I don’t want to see it slip away,” he added. “Because it’s like a part of us slipping away. I mean when I say ‘us,’ I don’t mean us Apple; I mean us as Americans.”

Cook acknowledged the huge amount of data that could potentially be accessed on a user’s iPhone, but he stressed that Apple remained committed to privacy.

“We’re at a stage now, where more information is available about you, online and on your phone than there is in your house,” Cook said. “You know, chances are your phone knows what you’ve been browsing, knows your friends, knows your relationships, has all of your photos.”

He also argued that user data was not necessary to improve smart technology like Siri or Amazon’s Alexa. He called any claims by other tech companies that this information was crucial to developing and updating this type of technology “a bunch of bunk.”

Asked about Apple’s commitment to privacy, Cook pointed to an interview from June 1, 2010, where late Apple founder Steve Jobs said that “privacy means people know what they’re signing up for in plain English and repeatedly.”

He called this view both simple and “profound,” and said that he couldn’t imagine a future Apple CEO viewing privacy differently: “I think the next person — I don’t want to commit them — but I can’t imagine it. It’s not in my imagination that somebody would just say, ‘Oh, time to change.'”

Mr. Mueller, due to his direct involvement as former FBI Director and his role in covering up and protecting Gulen Networks’ criminal operations within the United States, by shutting down pertinent FBI investigative operations and by transferring certain terrorism related Gulen files to the counterintelligence division, has a major conflict of interest as Special Counsel targeting Flynn’s caseas it pertains to exposing the Gulen network and his relationship with Turkish entities sharing the same interest in exposing and extraditing Fethullah Gulen. Thus, Mr. Mueller must step down from his position as Special Counsel in this case- a case targeting and probing Lt. General Michael Flynn.

‘Please Stop Emailing Me’ — Judiciary Committee Chief Counsel Sends Blistering Response To Michael Avenatti

The Senate Judiciary Committee’s chief counsel for nominations on Tuesday issued a quick, blistering response to Julie Swetnick attorney Michael Avenatti’s plea to “respond to our requests.”

“Stop playing games,” Avenatti wrote in the Tuesday email to Mike Davis. “If you are the Chief Counsel, then you need to do your job. Please respond to our requests.”

To which Davis responded:

Swetnick’s claims have increasingly come under fire as her own credibility has been undermined by both recent interviews and her own past actions.

Blumenthal Breaks With Feinstein, Joins Schumer In Calls To Make FBI Kavanaugh Report Public

Democratic Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal broke ranks with Sen. Dianne Feinstein and called Wednesday for the FBI report on Judge Brett Kavanaugh to be made public.

Blumenthal was commenting on the FBI’s investigation into Kavanaugh’s past and said he believes the findings should be made available to the public, because facts are the only thing that matter.

“What’s important here are the facts, all of the facts — that’s what the FBI’s investigation is supposed to uncover. That’s why we pressed so hard for it from day one,” Blumenthal said on CNN’s “New Day.”

“All facts are relevant potentially. All have to be judged in the larger context. As a journalist you understand that you ask questions and those questions lead to other facts and those facts have to be pursued,” the Connecticut Democrat continued.

Blumenthal claimed the FBI is the gold standard of law enforcement and the public should hear what it has to say about the Supreme Court nominee’s case.

“[The report] has to be made public in some form because of the overwhelming public interest and the issues of credibility at stake here. The FBI is the premiere law enforcement agency in the entire world and its report should be made public,” he said.

Feinstein, a California Democrat, has lobbied to keep the report confidential, but Blumenthal broke ranks and joined Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in pushing for its publication.

“Facts have to be followed. The law has to be pursued, wherever it leads,” Blumenthal concluded.

During an interview at the Atlantic Festival, failed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton compared suspected Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election – an "attack" by a foreign power – to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Clinton addressed a variety of topics in her on-stage interview with Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, recycling a handful of excuses for her loss, and accusing President Trump of embracing "white nationalism." She also seemed to accuse the Trump campaign of taking part in an international "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" to alter election results – a conspiracy that Special Counsel Robert Mueller's own year-long investigation has found no proof of.

“I believe that the combination of the Russian campaign, the WikiLeaks being the cutout for Russian stolen information, the role that Cambridge Analytica and other organizations like that played in connection with the Republican apparatus, the [Republican] National Committee and other allies and the Trump campaign certainly altered the outcome in enough places that we have to ask, ‘What really happened?’ ” she replied.

But the Democratic mainstay shocked even the Atlantic's audience when she launched into an extended comparison between the the Al Qaeda attack on New York City and Washington, D.C., that claimed thousands of lives, and Russian hacking.

"What we know now is incredibly troubling…we have been attacked by a foreign power and have done nothing," she said.

It would be like — I can’t even imagine — I mean, it’s a horrible example, but after 9/11, [if] George W. Bush said, ‘Well, I don’t have time to meet. I don’t have time to worry about this. It was terrible. We feel sorry about it. We’ll rebuild New York and the Pentagon, but we’re not going to worry about it.’ Well at a certain point, that’s what this is turning into. The evidence continues to accumulate,” Clinton added.

It is, in fact, a horrible example, particularly considering former President Barack Obama would have been responsible for handling threats to America's election apparatus ahead of an election taking place on his watch.

Voters at Trump’s Mississippi rally on Tuesday evening chanted “We want Kavanaugh!” when the president first mentioned his nominee to the Supreme Court.

Trump challenged Senate Democrats for acting “holier than thou” in their scrutiny of Kavanaugh’s high school and college drinking.

“They want to destroy people,” he said. “These are really evil people.”

Trump also pointed out the inconsistencies in Kavanaugh’s accuser Christine Ford’s testimony that she “didn’t remember” the details of her alleged assault.

“A man’s life is in tatters,” Trump said. “A man’s life is shattered. His wife is shattered. His daughters, who are beautiful, incredible young kids.”

US Threat of Preemptive Strike on Russia ‘Impossible to Take Seriously’

US Envoy to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison threatened on Tuesday to “take out” banned cruise missiles allegedly in development in Russia before they become operational.

Moscow denies they are developing a medium-range ground-launched system in violation of the Cold War era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.

But should the alleged system become operational, "At that point, we would be looking at the capability to take out a missile that could hit any of our countries," Hutchison told reporters, referring to European allies of the US. "Countermeasures would be to take out the missiles that are in development by Russia in violation of the treaty."

International relations and security analyst Mark Sleboda didn't mince words when analyzing the envoy's remarks in an interview with Radio Sputnik's Loud & Clear. Hutchison "just threatened a preemptive attack on Russia. That's what she did today, and she said it twice — she doubled down on it," he said.

After widespread scrutiny of her comment on a preemptive strike, Hutchison took to Twitter to deny that she had threatened any such thing. "I was not talking about preemptively striking Russia," she said. It is difficult to imagine how else a threat to destroy a missile system before it's up and running can be characterized, however.

Israel Will Demand New Weapons From US Amid S-300 Supply to Syria - Scholar

In an interview with Sputnik, Egyptian expert on Israel Muhammed Ali said that now that Syria has received S-300 air defense missiles from Russia, Tel Aviv will insist on getting similar weapons from the United States.

He added that the statement Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made on Facebook on Tuesday about his country’s right to self-defense amply proved this.

“Israel realizes that with the deployment of S-300 systems in Syria, it will no longer be able to provide emergency help to militants by striking Syrian military installations from the air,” the expert noted.

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked the US government and Congress for the historic 10-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the US and Israel on security assistance to the Jewish state.

“I thank the American administration and Congress for their commitment to Israel and also for the American financial assistance in the coming decade,” Netanyahu stated.

The MOU, signed in September 2016, guarantees Israel $38 billion in security aid over the coming decade.

This is the largest military assistance package that the United States has ever given to any country.

Speaking on Wednesday, Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said that Tel Aviv wasn't "happy" about the S-300sdeliveries to Syria, but it could not give up on its military operations in the war-ravaged country.

"I cannot say that we are happy about the deployment of the S-300s. At the same tome, we have no choice here. We have no opportunity to make decisions [on military operations in Syria]," he said.

The minister further stated that it was important for Russia and Israel to restore normal ties despite their disagreements over the downing of the Il-20 reconnaissance plane.

11 confirmed dead in US transport plane crash in Afghanistan

An American C-130 transport plane has crashed in Afghanistan, killing at least 11 people, a US defense official has said. Among the dead are several US troop members and contracted civilians whose nationalities have not been disclosed.

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for shooting down the C-130, according to AFP. However, this information has not yet been confirmed, and US authorities previously denied any hostile engagement.

“Our mujahideen have shot down a four-engine US aircraft in Jalalabad,” AFP cited Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid as saying. “Based on credible information, 15 invading forces and a number of puppet troops were killed.”

Six US service members and five civilian contractors on board died in the crash, according to a US military spokesman, who did not rule out the possibility of more casualties on the ground.

At the same time, NBC reported that the plane crash claimed the lives of 12 people, including five US servicemen, five contractors, and two Afghani civilians.

A coalition spokesperson US Army Col. Brian Tribus has said the plane crashed shortly after midnight local time (3:30 p.m. ET) at Jalalabad Airport.

"Cause of the crash and status of crew and others onboard remains unknown," Tribus said, according to NBC News. "We are gathering more information and will release as appropriate."

“[We're] not releasing nationalities of contracted civilians at this time,” Col. Tribus said.

A four-engine turboprop aircraft, the C-130 Hercules is usually used to transport personnel and cargo.

Pentagon sources have ruled out the possibility that the C-130 which crashed was shot down, while the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing at Bagram Airfield described the crash as “an accident.”

The official cause of the C-130 crash has not yet been determined, but officials said that there had been no reports of enemy fire at the time of the incident.

The United States Air Force operates a base at the Jalalabad airport that is located about 3 miles (4.8 km) southeast of the city of Jalalabad.

Under a deal between the US and Afghanistan, there were 9,800 American troops remaining in Afghanistan for the Resolute Support mission up until the end of September. In March it was agreed that troop levels would drop to 5,500 for the remainder of the year and most of 2016.

Officially launched on January 1, 2015, the Resolute Support mission replaced NATO-led ISAF forces after 12 years of operations. The mission, which officially expired on Wednesday, involved a total of 13,223 troops from 40 contributing nations.
