Ohio's largest Catholic diocese to out abusive priests

CLEVELAND – Ohio's largest Roman Catholic diocese will join three other dioceses in the state and release a list of priests who have been removed from their posts because of sexual abuse and misconduct allegations.

The Diocese of Cleveland's list will include the names of abusive priests, even if they are now dead, church officials said Tuesday.

The diocese since 2002 has been announcing the names of clerics removed from ministry because of sex abuse allegations, said diocesan spokesman Jim Armstrong. Its website includes 29 names, with some of the allegations going back decades.

"It would be wrong to suggest that the Diocese of Cleveland has not committed to release the names of clerics accused of sexually abusing a minor or that it desires to keep secret the names of such clerics," Armstrong said.

The new names to be added will go back as far as the diocese's records permit, Cleveland.com reported.

Three Ohio dioceses announced in recent weeks plans to release lists of priests who have been removed from ministry comes after a lengthy Pennsylvania grand jury report that in August listed the names of more than 300 priests and outlined the details of sexual abuse allegations.

The Diocese of Columbus said last week it would release a list in the next few months that will include the names of clergy who have been credibly accused of abuse, whether they are living or dead.

The Youngstown diocese and Steubenville's diocese also have committed to releasing the names of abusive priests.

The two remaining dioceses in Ohio — Cincinnati and Toledo — say they already make it a practice to release the names of priests who have been removed, although it's unclear how far back those lists reach.

The Cleveland diocese is Ohio's largest, with nearly 700,000 members.

It provided Cuyahoga County prosecutors all relevant files during a grand jury investigation similar to Pennsylvania's in 2002, Armstrong has said.

Unlike Pennsylvania, prosecutors in Cleveland never produced a report about the grand jury's findings.

In a 2003 court decision denying a request to release the records presented to the grand jury, a Cuyahoga County said that prosecutors had identified more than 1,000 possible victims of sexual abuse and 496 possible offenders, including 143 priests. Sixty four of the priests were living in the Cleveland area at the time.

Also this week, a Roman Catholic diocese in Connecticut announced it has chosen a retired state judge to lead an investigation into sexual abuse of children by priests.

Mattis Vows No Cut in Military Support for France in Mali

PARIS — U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said Tuesday that the U.S. will not reduce its support for the French-led military operations against insurgents in Mali.

"We have no intention of cutting back one bit on that support," said Mattis.

Speaking alongside Mattis at a press conference in Paris, French Defense Minister Florence Parly said the Pentagon chief reassured her that any changes in U.S. operations or forces in Africa would not affect support provided to France.

The Pentagon has been reevaluating its troop presence and operations in Africa after the ambush in Niger last year that killed four U.S. soldiers and four of their Niger counterparts. French forces were part of the rescue force that went to the aid of U.S. forces after the Niger attack.

French leaders have previously suggested they'd like to see continued or additional American support in Africa, where militant groups continue to wage attacks.

Extremist groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State organization are active in Mali, targeting Malian and French troops and other high-profile targets including the headquarters of a new regional counterterror force.

The U.S. and other western nations provide funding and support for a regional counterterror force, the G5 Sahel, which includes forces from Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad and Mauritania.

In addition, the U.S. in the latest budget has provided $46 million for French-led military operations in the region. U.S. forces also provide intelligence, surveillance, refueling and transport assistance for the French troops in the Sahel.

Mattis is in Paris for meetings with top leaders, and is heading to Brussels for a meeting of defense ministers on Wednesday.

CEO Pleads Guilty to Selling Encrypted Phones to Organized Crime

In March, Motherboard reported that the FBI had arrested the CEO of Phantom Secure, a company selling custom, encrypted phones, and which allegedly provided them to high end organized criminal groups including the Sinaloa drug cartel. On Tuesday, Vincent Ramos, the CEO, pleaded guilty to running a criminal enterprise that facilitated drug trafficking, specifically through the sale of these encrypted phones.

The news is the latest legal skirmish in the so-called ‘going dark’ debate, where law enforcement say they are hampered from viewing criminals’ communications due to encryption and other security protections. The plea is also a blow to an industry that has operated with relative openness for years.

“In his plea agreement, Ramos admitted that he and his co-conspirators facilitated the distribution of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine to locations around the world including in the United States, Australia, Mexico, Canada, Thailand and Europe by supplying narcotics traffickers with Phantom Secure encrypted communications devices designed to thwart law enforcement,” a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of California, published Tuesday, reads.

Ramos has agreed to an $80 million forfeiture money judgment, as well as giving up tens of millions of dollars of other assets, including cryptocurrency and bank accounts, a Lamborghini, multiple properties, and gold coins, the press release adds.

Ex-judge to lead diocese's investigation of priest abuse

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – A Roman Catholic diocese in Connecticut announced Wednesday that it has chosen a retired state judge to lead an investigation into sexual abuse of children by priests, a review that will look at allegations and church records dating back to when the diocese was founded in 1953.

Robert Holzberg, who retired as a state Superior Court judge in 2012 and returned to private law practice, will be lead investigator and counsel for the Diocese of Bridgeport's investigation, which church officials say will begin immediately and be finished next spring.

The diocese, which includes more than 460,000 Catholics in 82 parishes in Fairfield County, has faced at least three dozen lawsuits alleging sexual abuse of children by priests since the early 1990s, leading to more than $35 million in settlements, the Connecticut Post has reported. Five more men sued the diocese last month, saying priests abused them when they were children in the late 1980s to the early 2000s.

Twenty-nine priests in the diocese — living and dead — have been credibly accused of sexual abuse, according to the diocese.

Bishop Frank Caggiano revealed last month that the diocese would launch an investigation. The announcement came amid continuing sex abuse scandals in the church worldwide, including a Pennsylvania grand jury report in August that detailed decades of abuse and cover-ups involving allegations that more than 1,000 children were abused by about 300 priests.

"My hope is that these measures will begin to heal the wounds that we feel and address the legitimate desire for real change that restores confidence in every level of leadership," Caggiano said. "I believe that the Church is facing a moment of crisis that demands honesty and repentance from the bishops and decisive action to ensure that these failures will never happen again."

The investigation will review and analyze claims of sexual abuse of minors by clergy, diocese officials' knowledge of abuse and their response to allegations. Church officials say Holzberg will have unrestricted access to all diocesan files dating back 65 years.

Holzberg said in a statement that he made full access to church files a condition of his leading the investigation.

Also this week, the Diocese of Cleveland became the fourth of six in Ohio to say it will publish a list of priests removed from their posts because of sexual abuse and misconduct allegations.

Russia will monitor air traffic in Israel, Saudi Arabia, Europe from Syria

The advanced defence and surveillance systems which Russia intends to send to Syria will be able to monitor flight movements in Israel, Saudi Arabia and Europe, media reports said.

“We will know not only that someone has entered the airspace in this region, but also that somewhere a plane is only operating on the runway, be it in Israel or Saudi Arabia or even in Europe,” Vladimir Mikheyev, first deputy director of government-owned Concern Radio-Electronic Technologies, told Russia’s Tass news agency

“Systems capable of combating precision weapons-guided bombs and missiles … will be added to the conventional radar protection systems,” he added.

Mikheyev pointed out that Moscow is planning to strengthen its own defence systems which could include the instalment of aerosol smokescreens which make airplanes invisible to missiles.

Russia is to send its S-300 defence system to Syria after President Bashar Al-Assad’s air force accidently downed a Russian plane killing all 15 personnel aboard during an Israeli attack on the Syrian territories.

MK: Israel to extend its sovereignty over all historic Palestine

Israel will extend its sovereignty over the entire area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, Member of the Knesset Moti Yogev said yesterday.

The official from the Jewish Home party added:

There had been no Palestinian state and there will never be a Palestinian state. Israel will remain Jewish.

He noted that the Palestinians, under a Jewish Israeli state, would be given self-administration in their municipalities and would have West Bank citizenship in any future agreement.

“Israel will remain Jewish and with an increasing Jewish majority. We will extend Israeli sovereignty over the area lying between the Jordan River and Mediterranean in the future.”

US Turns World War III Ambitions Towards Ukraine as Syria Plans Unravel

The United States Government is now treating Ukraine as if it were a NATO member, and on September 27th donated to Ukraine two warships for use against Russia. This is the latest indication that the U.S. is switching to Ukraine as the locale to start World War III, and from which the nuclear war is to be sparked against Russia, which borders Ukraine.

Here is why Syria is no longer the U.S. alliance’s preferred choice as a place to start WW III:

On September 4th, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly threatened Syria, Iran, and Russia that if they exterminated the jihadists in Syria’s only remaining jihadist-controlled province, Idlib, then the U.S. might launch a full-scale invasion against Syria, Iran and Russia in Syria. Either the U.S. or Russia would then quickly escalate to nuclear war so as not to lose in Syria — that would be the conventional-war start to World War III.

The leaders of Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Syria (Putin, Rouhani, Erdogan, and Assad), agreed in two meetings, one on September 7th and the other on September 17th, to (as I had recommended on September 10th) transfer control of Syria’s only remaining jihadist-controlled province, Idlib, to NATO-member Turkey. This action effectively prevents the U.S. alliance from going to war against Russia if Russia’s alliance (which includes Syria) obliterates all the jihadist groups in the Al-Qaeda-led Syrian province Idlib. For the U.S. to war against Russia, there would also be war against fellow-NATO-member Turkey — out of the question.

The U.S. has been using Al Qaeda in Syria to train and lead the jihadist groups which have been trying to overthrow Syria’s Government and to replace it with a government that has been selected by the Saud family who owns Saudi Arabia. Ever since 1949, the U.S. Government has been trying to do this (to place the Saud family in charge of Syria). That plan is now being placed on-hold if not blocked altogether, because of the Russia, Turkey, Iran, Syria, agreement. As I reported on September 25th, “Turkey Now Controls Syria’s Jihadists”. The U.S. would no longer be able to save them, but Turkey would if Erdogan wants to. “Turkey is thus now balanced on a knife’s edge, between the US and its allies (representing the Saud family) on the one side, versus Russia and its allies (representing the anti-Saud alliance) on the other.”

Pompeo Terminates Iran Treaty After UN Court Hands Tehran A Victory In Sanctions Lawsuit Against Washington

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Wednesday the U.S. will terminate a 63-year-old treaty with Iran, hours after a top United Nations court ruled in favor of Tehran in a lawsuit challenging U.S. sanctions.

Pompeo said the abrogation of the 1955 Treaty of Amity was “39 years overdue,” referring to the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran that resulted in the overthrow of the U.S.-friendly shah.

Until Pompeo’s announcement, the Treaty of Amity had remained in force even though Washington and Tehran have not had normal diplomatic relations since 1980.

The move follows a ruling by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that ordered Washington to lift any sanctions on Iran affecting humanitarian exports. Iran had sued the U.S. in July, arguing the renewal of sanctions that had been lifted as part of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal violated the 1955 treaty.

At a press briefing Wednesday morning, Pompeo called Iran’s claims under the treaty “absurd.” He also accused Tehran of exploiting the ICJ for propaganda purposes as it tries to preserve the framework of the nuclear deal.

In its ruling, the ICJ said U.S. sanctions had violated Iran’s rights under the treaty by making it “difficult if not impossible” for Iran to purchase non-sanctioned items such as foodstuffs and medical supplies. Sanctions on those goods may have a “serious detrimental impact on the health and lives of individuals on the territory of Iran,” ICJ Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf said.

The ICJ ruling comes as Iran is trying to preserve the framework of the nuclear deal with the remaining participants — Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China. At the UN General Assembly session in September, representatives from the signatories announced the creation of a special financial channel that aims to allow them to continue trading with Iran while avoiding U.S. sanctions.

Despite those efforts, Iran’s economy has faltered since the U.S. pulled out of the nuclear deal in May. Dozens of major European firms have suspended their operations in Iran due to the threat of secondary sanctions, while the Iranian rial has plummeted in value amid a spike in domestic prices and high unemployment.

Pompeo called the ICJ ruling a “defeat for Iran” because it did not grant all of Tehran’s requests to block U.S. sanctions. Washington will allow certain humanitarian transactions with Iran to continue via already existing exceptions to U.S. sanctions laws, he added.

The provisional ICJ ruling allows the U.S. to make additional arguments before a final decision is rendered. Washington is likely to challenge the decision on the grounds that U.S. rights to pursue its national security interests supersede Iran’s rights under the 1955 treaty.

The European Parliament’s Brexit coordinator has said he will “never” allow the UK to control its own borders, claiming a system based on allowing in professionals and people with the skills the nation needs amounts to “discrimination”.

Ranting before MEPs on Tuesday, arch-liberal and federalist Guy Verhofstadt also personally attacked senior members of the Tory Party and rejected proposals from leadership favourite Boris Johnson to extend the Article 50 process.

He claimed that “enough mess has been created” by Brexit already, adding “let’s stop it”, before deploring the actions of the Conservative Party in recent weeks as “insane”.

On Tuesday, home secretary Sajid Javid announced plans to prioritise immigrants’ skills, rather than their country of origin, in a post-Brexit shake-up of the visa system and immigration.

The government claimed the move would bring down numbers by capping unskilled migration. However, critics said numbers could go up as more skilled migrants would be allowed in as businesses would be handed more power.

Mr Verhofstadt rejected the proposals outright, insisting the bloc “will never accept discrimination based on skills and nationality, as Mr Javid this morning proposed”.

Launching an extraordinary attack on senior Conservatives, he continued: “When you see these insane notions of some Tory politicians of the last days: Boris Johnson, his latest invention, you have seen that?

“He will solve the problem by building a bridge between the UK mainland and Ireland. Mr Boris Johnson is more known for burning bridges than for building bridges!

“Then there’s Mr Rees-Mogg who’s saying ‘yeah, I have the proposals for the future of Brexit, ordinary citizens and their savings can be secure after Brexit!’ and in the meantime he’s opening for himself an investment fund in Ireland, to transfer his money to Ireland.”

He added: “Jeremy Hunt, who is comparing the European Union with the Soviet Union. But in his case that is not so abnormal: he has once even confused Japan with China. This is not the first time this is happening.

“The previous time he was insulting his wife, but this time it’s something far more different: he’s insulting not us, but millions of ordinary citizens who have lived under Soviet rule for so long.

“That is, in fact, a point on which he has to apologise, I think because we cannot take it as such a thing he said.”
