Washington, D.C. – House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) today subpoenaed the Department of Justice for several documents that have been withheld from the Committee, including the McCabe memos.

The McCabe memos are documents and communications written by former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe that memorialize discussions, meetings, or correspondence he had with senior officials. The House Judiciary Committee has been requesting the McCabe memos for months.

Today’s subpoena also covers all documents supporting the facts claimed by the FBI in its application for, and subsequent renewals of, a FISA order authorizing surveillance on Carter Page, as well as all documents and communications originally shared with the Gang of Eight related to the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election

Below is the text of the letter to Attorney General Jeff Sessions subpoenaing these documents. The signed letter can be found here and subpoena can be found here.

The Honorable Jeff Sessions

Attorney General

U.S. Department of Justice

950 Pennsylvania Ave. NW

Washington, D.C. 20530

Dear Mr. Sessions,

As you are aware, last fall Chairman Gowdy and I opened an investigation into decisions made and not made by the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding the 2016 presidential election. As part of that investigation, Members and staff of the Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform Committees have reviewed thousands of documents produced by the Department that are relevant to our investigation. However, we have requested additional documents (listed in the document schedule for the attached subpoena) that the Department has either refused to produce or has continually delayed producing. Review of these documents is essential to our investigation.

Accordingly, given the Department’s ongoing delays and/or refusal to produce these documents, I am left with no choice but to issue the enclosed subpoena to compel their production.

Thank you for your prompt attention to this important matter. If any part of the production has been designated as classified pursuant to Executive Order 13526, please contact Committee majority staff so that arrangements may be made to ensure that the documents are handled appropriately within the House.

Sincerely,

Bob Goodlatte

Chairman
