Things were done differently in the Old Testament under the Mosaic Law which is no longer in effect. It pissed me off to no end when Obama kept quoting Old Testament as if we are still bound by those laws/traditions.
Physical punishment was harsher back then as a diversion to evil before an understanding of spiritual death and hell. After Jesus explained "the second death" he also supplemented his teaching by saying he desired mercy not sacrifice. This was counter to the "old ways" of dealing with sinners.
