I used to live just South of VAFB. These tests happen regularly. I've seen missiles shot down by missiles. They warned us before the event because it looks really scary if you don't know it's a test. You would see a missile screaming toward the coast coming from beyond the Pacific horizon. It would get nearly over land, then if you looked toward VAFB you would see a missile launched at the incoming one. When they collided there would be a giant explosion that would cover a large portion of the sky above.
