DOJ needs to give California $28M, judge says in immigration law ruling against Trump administration

A law that said states and cities couldn't keep officials from reporting people's immigration status to U.S. authorities was struck down by a judge in California on Friday. The ruling was at least the third decision by a U.S. district court judge declaring the immigration law unconstitutional in recent months.

Subsequently, Judge William Orrick ruled, the Department of Justice needs to give California $28 million that was held back due to the state’s immigration policies.

The law was cited by the Trump administration earlier this year in litigation in an attempt to block multiple state laws, one of which prevented police from providing release dates and personal information of jail inmates. That information, officials claimed, was required in order to remove dangerous illegal immigrants.

Orrick's ruling Friday in lawsuits by California and San Francisco may be the most significant yet because it applies to a major target of the administration's opposition to sanctuary jurisdictions. Orrick forbade Attorney General Jeff Sessions from enforcing the immigration law against California or any of its cities or counties.

The law, the judge said, "undermines existing state and local policies and strips local policymakers of the power to decide for themselves whether to communicate with" immigration officials.

Sheriff: Man ambushed officers coming to question adult son about a child sexual assault

A 74-year-old Vietnam War veteran who won a military sharpshooting decoration ambushed police officers coming to his South Carolina home to question his adult son about a child sexual assault, killing one and wounding six others, the sheriff investigating the case said Friday.

Florence County investigators called Hopkins' home and arranged to speak to his 28-year-old adopted son, Seth Hopkins, about a sex assault investigation Wednesday afternoon, Lott said, adding that they had a search warrant. Officials had previously given the son's age as 27.

Several children in the home were not harmed, authorities said.

Frederick Hopkins is a Vietnam veteran and a disbarred attorney. Hopkins earned his law license after he left the military but was disbarred a few years later for mishandling money.

Seth Hopkins was charged Friday with second-degree criminal sexual conduct. Authorities didn't immediately release details about the crime.

Frederick Hopkins' wife, Cheryl Turner Hopkins, is an attorney and attended a hearing Friday that Solicitor Ed Clements said concerned emergency custody for children in the home. The solicitor did not provide details on the hearing and the Family Court judge sealed the case.

Devin Nunes in safe lead over Andrew Janz as ‘Trump looms large,’ new poll shows

Incumbent Nunes, a Tulare Republican, had the support of 53 percent of likely voters, while Democratic challenger Janz had 45 percent.

District 22 includes parts of Fresno and Sanger and Visalia.

In an analysis accompanying the survey results, Poll Director Mark DiCamillo said “the shadow of President Donald Trump looms large over voters in each district and appears to be a reason why a number of these historically Republican-leaning districts are in play.”

Pollsters found a direct relationship between respondents’ support for congressional candidates and their like or dislike of Trump.

In Nunes’ district, 56 percent of polled likely voters approved of Trump’s job performance and 44 percent disapproved.

TV reporter fired for wearing ‘Make America Great Again’ hat at Trump rally

A Minnesota television reporter who wore a “Make America Great Again” hat to President Trump’s rally on Thursday has been fired.

James Bunner wore Trump’s signature red hat to the Rochester rally he was covering for his employer, KTTC-TV.

A photo of Brunner at the rally shows him standing next to a video camera wearing the hat with a matching red coat emblazoned with the logo of the news station.

The station’s news director, Noel Sederstrom, told the Associated Press that the news organization does not allow its journalists to cover stories while wearing insignia that promotes any political campaign. As a result, Bunner was fired Friday, Sederstrom said.

Many news organizations prohibit reporters from openly sharing their political views or supporting political candidates, especially when those reporters are covering politics and policy.
