Fears are growing over the missing Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi, after Turkish officials said they believed he had been murdered.

Mr Khashoggi, a Saudi national, was last seen visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on Tuesday.

A Turkish official told the BBC that initial investigations indicated he was murdered there.

Saudi Arabia has denied the accusations, saying it is "working to search for him".

Mr Khashoggi has contributed articles to the Washington Post's opinion section. The Post said it would be a "monstrous and unfathomable act" if he had been killed.

An official of Turkey's ruling AK Party told broadcaster CNN Turk there was concrete evidence in the case, although none has yet been presented.

China has confirmed it is holding the missing head of Interpol, Meng Hongwei.

Beijing said he was under investigation by the country's anti-corruption body for unspecified breaches of the law.

Mr Meng, also a vice-minister of public security in China, was reported missing after travelling from the city of Lyon in France, where Interpol is based, to China on 25 September.

Interpol said it had received his resignation from the presidency on Sunday with immediate effect.

Theresa May has made a pitch to Labour voters unhappy at Jeremy Corbyn's leadership, urging people to look beyond "party labels".

Writing in the Observer, the prime minister said voters were not "bound by ideology" and urged lifelong Labour voters to look "afresh" at her party.

She said the Tories had to offer a "positive and optimistic vision" and do more than just criticise Mr Corbyn.

But Labour said people were facing "brutal cuts" and "won't be fooled".

Mrs May's pitch to Labour supporters follows her speech to the Conservative Party conference in which she set out domestic policies including a boost to council house-building and a promised end to austerity.

But the conference was dominated by Brexit, with her strategy facing heavy criticism as discussions with the EU enter the final straight.

SNP MPs would back a new Brexit referendum if it were put to them, party leader Nicola Sturgeon has said.

Campaigners have been pressing for a fresh vote on whatever exit plans result from talks with EU leaders.

PM Theresa May has rejected calls for a so-called People's Vote and while Labour has not ruled it out, it wants a general election to decide the issue.

Ms Sturgeon said SNP MPs would oppose anything short of staying in the single market and customs union.

Neither choice features in the plan backed by the cabinet at Chequers in July, which the prime minister insists is the only credible option to avoid a "no-deal" scenario.

EU leaders said last month that Mrs May's proposed new economic partnership "will not work". However, they have struck a more optimistic note in recent days.

Large numbers of Brazilians have been voting in the most polarised presidential election for many years.

Long queues formed at polling stations across the country, where almost 150 million people are eligible to vote.

If no candidate gets more than 50% of the valid ballots, there will be a second round in three weeks.

Opinion polls suggest far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro, who has vowed to be tough on crime, is the favourite to secure most votes.

One round or two?

His main rival is the left-wing candidate for the Workers' Party, Fernando Haddad. Both are expected to advance to the run-off on 28 October although Mr Bolsonaro and his supporters have said they think they can get the 50% of the valid votes needed to win outright.

MISSION HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) –

Two homeless people, a man and a woman, were sleeping in Devonwood Park, when police said the pair was doused with a liquid and suddenly felt their faces burning.

"We believe the chemical was acid-based. It caused severe burns to the face and to the arms and she is being treated by the USC burn center," said Lt. Joseph Kalyn, from the LAPD Mission Division Station.

Police said the man who was also doused with the liquid looked around and didn't see anyone. His burns were less severe and he was released from the hospital.

Yazmin, who is also homeless, spends a lot of time in the park and said she doesn't feel any danger.
