of carpetbagging in Michigan 8th Congressional District

It has been 18 years since a Democrat held the U.S. House seat in Michigan’s 8th Congressional District.

Even so, the race between political newcomer Elissa Slotkin and incumbent Mike Bishop is viewed as a bellwether in the fight for control of the U.S. House in November.

Slotkin, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst, is looking to unseat the two-term Republican congressman, who received 56 percent of the vote in his 2016 re-election bid. The district, which stretches from north of Detroit to the state capital Lansing, voted for President Trump with 51 percent of the vote.

Slotkin is seen as a "different kind" of Democrat who served in both the Bush and Obama administrations, supports existing gun rights and criticizes single-payer health care.

Conservative PAC releases document on Spanberger teaching at Saudi-funded school

A conservative super PAC provided news media with a document Tuesday showing that Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic nominee in the 7th U.S. Congressional District, years ago taught at a Saudi-funded school in Northern Virginia that later had to defend itself after a former valedictorian was charged with joining al-Qaida.

Spanberger, a former CIA officer, successfully completed the agency’s background check after she had taught at the school in late 2002 and 2003.

The Spanberger campaign said it believes the Congressional Leadership Fund PAC obtained an unredacted national security questionnaire illegally. A consultant for the PAC, which is linked to House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said the records were obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request
