Cancer Council calls for Australian review amid Roundup cancer concerns

Australia's peak cancer body is calling for an independent review into the world's most popular weedkiller, which has been linked to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Cancer Council Australia is concerned there has not been an independent or formal review of the chemical glyphosate — the active ingredient in Roundup — in more than two decades.

The chemical is the most widely used herbicide on the planet and is popular with home gardeners and farmers in Australia.

In 2015, the World Health Organisation body, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), classified glyphosate as "probably carcinogenic to humans".

"We are concerned that this issue's not being taken seriously enough in Australia, particularly by the agricultural industry," Cancer Council Australia CEO Dr Sanchia Aranda said.

Andrew Gillum makes appeal to Jewish voters, and Jewish leaders vouch for him

Andrew Gillum delivered a political — and strongly personal — argument on Sunday to Jewish voters, a critically important constituency for Democrats in the closely contested race for Florida governor.

Those who suggest the Democratic nominee for governor isn’t a friend of Israel or a friend of the Jewish community — “folks that would like to spew misinformation about my record” — don’t know him and don’t know what they’re talking about, Gillum said during a speech at the Century Pines Jewish Center.

“There are some who would like to misconstrue what my relationship is with the Jewish community. But they don’t know the stories that I can tell about that relationship,” he said. “I don’t have to be born to a Jewish mother and father to know the value of tikkun olam, the value of what it means to be repairers of the world, to stand in the gap on behalf of people. And in fact that has been the very testament of my life up to this point.”

In recent weeks, Republican Ron DeSantis’s campaign has been attempting to undermine Gillum with Jewish voters, suggesting that the Democrat is too close to people who are anti-Semitic and isn’t sufficiently supportive of issues important to Israel.

Gillum rejected those assertions.
