Could have hit soft dirt with under carraige. Dirt gives way, but stops vehicle. Did area have a rainy spell?
As previous poster said, occupants became projectiles.
IOW vehicle didn't hit an object more dense than the vehicle itself, Injuries caused by sudden stop.
