James Comey and the Unending Bush Torture Scandal

The vast regime of torture created by the Bush administration after the 9/11 attacks continues to haunt America. The political class and most of the media have never dealt honestly with the profound constitutional corruption that such practices inflicted. Instead, torture enablers are permitted to pirouette as heroic figures on the flimsiest evidence.

Former FBI chief James Comey is the latest beneficiary of the media’s “no fault” scoring on the torture scandal. In his media interviews for his new memoir, A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership, Comey is portraying himself as a Boy Scout who sought only to do good things. But his record is far more damning than most Americans realize.

Comey continues to use memos from his earlier government gigs to whitewash all of the abuses he sanctified. “Here I stand; I can do no other,” Comey told George W. Bush in 2004 when Bush pressured Comey, who was then Deputy Attorney General, to approve an unlawful anti-terrorist policy. Comey was quoting a line supposedly uttered by Martin Luther in 1521, when he told Emperor Charles V and an assembly of Church officials that he would not recant his sweeping criticisms of the Catholic Church.

The American Civil Liberties Union, Human Rights Watch, and other organizations did excellent reports prior to Comey’s becoming FBI chief that laid out his role in the torture scandal. Such hard facts, however, have long since vanished from the media radar screen. MSNBC host Chris Matthews recently declared, “James Comey made his bones by standing up against torture. He was a made man before Trump came along.” Washington Post columnist Fareed Zakaria, in a column declaring that Americans should be “deeply grateful” to lawyers such as Comey, declared, “The Bush administration wanted to claim that its ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’ were lawful. Comey believed they were not…. So Comey pushed back as much as he could.”

Martin Luther risked death to fight against what he considered the scandalous religious practices of his time. Comey, a top Bush administration policymaker, found a safer way to oppose the worldwide secret U.S. torture regime widely considered a heresy against American values: he approved brutal practices and then wrote some memos and emails fretting about the optics.

American Troops Have Been Fighting And Dying In Afghanistan For 17 Years — Poll Shows US Vets Think Enough Is Enough

A majority of U.S. military veterans are skeptical about continued U.S. involvement in the Afghanistan War, according to a new poll from the Charles Koch Institute.

Nearly seven in 10 veterans polled would support an order by the president to withdraw all U.S. forces from Afghanistan.

The poll comes amid fresh doubts about the rationale for continued U.S. involvement in the Afghanistan War, which entered its 18th year on Sunday.

After 17 years of war in Afghanistan, a comfortable majority of American veterans say they would support a decision by President Donald Trump to pull all U.S. troops out of the country, according to a survey released Monday by a Washington think tank.

The joint poll from RealClearPolitics and the Charles Koch Institute, a libertarian-oriented research organization, found that more than half of Americans are skeptical of continued U.S. military involvement in Afghanistan, an assessment that is even more common among veterans.

According to the survey, 53 percent of Americans do not believe Washington has a clear strategic objective in the Afghanistan War. About 60 percent of veterans feel the same way.

An even greater share of respondents believe the U.S. should either reduce or totally withdraw American troops in Afghanistan within five years, the poll found. Among all Americans, 63 percent support the idea, and 64 percent of veterans agree.

If Trump were to order a withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan today, 69 percent of veterans would support the move, according to the survey.

“After nearly two decades of fighting in Afghanistan, Americans — including veterans — rightly recognize the war has not been going well and that we are strategically adrift,” William Ruger, vice president of research and policy at the Charles Koch Institute, said in a statement. “It is little wonder that a majority of Americans think we ought to decrease troop levels or even bring all of our forces home. The president should pay more attention to the American people’s realistic take than wishful thinking ‘experts’ who argue we need to stay the course.”

The Koch-RCP poll comes a day after the 17-year anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan to oust the Taliban regime, which harbored the al-Qaeda terrorists who perpetrated the 9/11 attacks. American and allied forces defeated the Taliban and drove al-Qaeda fighters into Pakistan within months, but they have remained ever since to battle a stubborn insurgency and prop up the weak U.S.-backed government in Kabul.

By most metrics, the U.S.-led occupation has largely failed to usher in a stable and unified Afghanistan. Today, the Taliban controls or contests 44 percent of Afghanistan’s territorial districts, according to the Pentagon. Independent analysis by the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies’ Long War Journal puts that figure at 61 percent.

The Taliban’s resurgence has been enabled by the Afghan government’s inability to stand up a cohesive national security force capable of decisively beating the insurgents in combat. Beset by corruption and desertion problems, Afghan army and police forces are now losing between 30 and 40 members per day to Islamic insurgents, rates not seen since the Pentagon stopped releasing official casualty counts in 2016.

Those disappointing results have come at a heavy price — more than 2,300 American troops killed, another 20,000 wounded, and more than $1 trillion spent on the war effort.

Trump came into office expressing deep doubts about the strategic rationale for keeping U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Even so, he authorized in August 2017 a “mini-surge” of about 3,000 U.S. troops as part of his administrations revamped South Asia strategy. In the 14 months since, the Taliban has inflicted heavy casualties on Afghan forces, dashing hopes the insurgency could be quickly forced to the negotiating table.

Even before Trump took office, the Afghanistan War was by far the longest sustained military conflict in U.S. history. America’s second-longest war, the Vietnam War, officially lasted nine years, as measured by the passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution in 1964 through the withdrawal of American combat forces in 1973.

The Koch-RCP poll of 1,210 U.S. adults and 613 current and former military personnel was conducted online by YouGov between Sept. 25-27. It has a margin of error of 2.9 percent for the national sample and 4.0 percent for the military sample.

Brussels Mulls Establishing Special Fund to Tackle Fake News, Foreign Propaganda

The Belgian authorities plan to create a fund to support projects aimed at identifying and tackling fake news and foreign propaganda, Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said.

The fund is planned to be established in early 2019 ahead of the parliamentary elections set for May. "This is relevant in the context of European, federal, and regional elections, as we know that foreign spin doctors are just waiting to thwart democratic debate in our country," De Croo said Monday.

The task of the new project will be to provide financial assistance to initiatives aimed at disclosing organizations that are behind publications on the Internet, developing "objective and reliable" indicators for transparency of sources, according to the information published on the deputy prime minister’s website.

In July, the special expert group formed by the Belgian authorities provided negative feedback on the idea of developing a separate law to deal with the issue of fake news.

Is GMO corn the #1 cause of the Cancer Apocalypse?

The chronic sick-care system of America banks on at least 200 million people of all ages consuming pesticides daily in order to maintain peak capacity at doctor’s offices and hospitals. Have you ever been to the doctor or an emergency room and been the only person there, first to be seen and right away? Ever known anyone to be diagnosed with a disease or disorder and a medical doctor or the oncologist tells them to stop eating genetically modified foods right away, and come back for a check-up in a month? It just doesn’t happen; however, it’s no conspiracy that consuming bug-killing and weed-killing chemicals causes disorder of the human cells, brain and cleansing organs.

Science proves that eating and drinking chemicals causes catastrophic cancer of all kinds, so let’s attack this pandemic-style cell manipulator at the root level, instead of dosing the problem on the back end with more chemicals (pharmaceuticals and chemotherapy) and miserably waiting for a prolonged, yet still early grave.

Monsanto scientists figured out a long time ago how to kill rootworm beetles and pesky corn field weeds using poison that’s embedded into the DNA of the corn plant’s seeds, then Monsanto has the farmers spray that “Roundup Ready” corn with more poison, with complete disregard for human and animal health, soil nutrition, and the sustainability of our environment.

More than 90 percent of all U.S. corn contains cancer-breeding GM toxins from the inside-out

So what poisons do you regularly consume that are made with a type of corn that contains genetically modified pesticides inside the plant and on the outside? How much cancer-causing corn do you eat and drink every day? What if you could fill some beakers with just the carcinogenic portion of your products – would it be a couple ounces or a couple pints? Let’s take a quick look at the most common GMO-corn-ridden products most Americans consume during and between every single meal.

Abortions: The Legal “Supermarket” For Fresh Fetal Tissue Used In CDC & FDA Research

The rather recent disclosure the U.S. government cancelled a contract to purchase “fresh” aborted fetuses tissues for research seems to be “growing legs,” as they say.

According to this website, 45 groups signed on to a common letter dated September 11, 2018 addressed to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, Alex M. Azar II, wherein the opening paragraph states:

We were shocked and dismayed at the news report that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has signed a contract to purchase “fresh” aborted fetal organs from Advanced Bioscience Resources, for the purpose of creating humanized mice with human immune systems. We expect far better of our federal agencies – especially under the leadership of a courageous pro-life president – entrusted with the health of American citizens. It is completely unacceptable to discover that the FDA is using federal tax dollars and fomenting demand for human body parts taken from babies who are aborted.

In 2015, disturbing undercover videos obtained by the Center for Medical Progress showed abortion industry staff discussing the sale of fetal brains, hearts, livers and other organs obtained from elective abortions. Subsequent investigations by the House Select Panel on Infant Lives and the Senate Judiciary Committee found evidence of violations of federal laws regarding the buying and selling of fetal organs.

Because there is a requirement for “fresh” tissue, what does this mean in terms of hours elapsed since the harvest of aborted fetal organs for delivery to FDA?

There is a larger question of openness and transparency at HHS regarding this issue. Not only is this shocking FDA contract of concern, but the National Institutes of Health (NIH) continues to fund fetal tissue experimentation. NIH’s own data indicate that during FY 2017 the NIH spent $98 million for fetal tissue research and expects to spend $103 million in FY 2018. The data for FY 2017 also indicate that while the bulk of this spending comprises grants to university researchers, a number of projects (approx. $21 million) involved experiments with fetal tissue on the NIH campus.

Fetal organ procurement is highly unethical and potentially illegal. The undercover investigation by the Center for Medical Progress found that many women solicited to donate aborted baby organs were given misleading consent forms to sign with statements that aborted tissue “has been used to treat and find a cure for such diseases as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and AIDS.” These blatantly false statements violate ethical standards by grossly misleading the patient.

Moreover, this research is irresponsible. Contrary to claims, there is no scientific requirement of aborted fetal tissue to construct humanized mice. Historically, humanized mice were constructed using aborted fetal organs such as fetal liver, fetal bone marrow, and fetal thymus, on the theory that young fetal tissue would be more robust in growth. But good scientific alternatives exist to this grisly sourcing, including use of human umbilical cord blood stem cells and adult peripheral blood stem cells. There are abundant modern scientific alternatives, making aborted fetal tissue unnecessary.
