From what I think I remember reading back during Obama's first term, the connections were from Indonesia/Asia, and I think Obama's mother was with the Ford foundation there.
The other time I think Geithner's name came up was when young Obama was in Chicago during a summer. Remember the story of a mailman who said he saw a kid he didn't know at some house, asked who he was, and the kid (Obama) told him who he was and that he was going to be president of the US one day? I vaguely remember a Geithner involved with that. So maybe a Chicago connection, but not sure.
What I do remember thinking was that a lot of the people in Obama's administration had known each other since they were little kids.
