Homeland In-security? 'Entire generation' of US weapons easily hackable

A report from the US Government Accountability Office paints a grim picture of American military security – or the lack thereof. A host of American weapons can easily be hacked, either due to tech issues or human incompetence.

The GAO report draws on 30 years of Department of Defense data and interviews with dozens of military officials to reveal a broad range of cybersecurity flaws in the world’s most high-tech military apparatus. Security holes were found both in aging systems and systems still under development, suggesting the problem is systemic.

The vulnerabilities are surprisingly low-tech for a country that spends more on the military than the next seven countries combined. Many security flaws involved weak passwords and unencrypted network traffic. Others suggested a poor understanding of network security by military technicians.

Test teams were able to guess one administrator’s password in nine seconds, while some weapons systems used the default passwords that came with the commercial software that ran the systems. Testers were able to download and delete classified data, take over operators’ screens, and track operators’ activity without alerting them.

Pakistan tests nuclear-capable missile after India cancels talks & signs S-400 deal with Russia

Pakistan has successfully test-launched its nuclear-capable missile system just after its archenemy India refused peace talks with Islamabad and bought billions-worth of weapons from Russia.

The missile system, which can fire both nuclear and conventional projectiles to a distance of 1,300km, was tested on Monday by the Army Strategic Forces Command (ASFC). The test of the Ghauri Ballistic Missile was praised by Pakistani President Arif Alvi, and Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The launch consolidates Pakistan’s nuclear capability, which is aimed at peace and stability through a credible deterrence regime,” the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement read.

Delete the prisons: France urges Google to remove jail pics after gangster escape on helicopter

The French Justice Minister called on Google to delete the images of its “security buildings,” including jails, from the maps. It comes after a notorious French gangster was put back behind bars after a spectacular escape.

Nicole Belloubet has pointed at a major flaw in the country's security in an interview to RTL, saying that it's “not normal” that detention facilities can be easily viewed on Google. 

Indeed, the prisons can be easily found on satellite images, including the photo of the jail in Reau, where career robber Redoine Faid broke out via a helicopter.

A video of bright blue lights swirling in the sky over Moscow has puzzled Russian social media. Those who want to believe are sure they were alien ships, although other explanations were also suggested.

The footage was published on YouTube last week (and is an atrocity really, because who shoots a vertical video nowadays?) taken somewhere in the southern part of the capital, it’s boldly titled: UFOs over Moscow. The author said he “saw it and my mind was blown.”

Hubble trouble: Deep space telescope in ‘safe mode’ after mechanical fail

It’s been used to date the galaxy and study black holes but now NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope is taking a break from activities due to a mechanical fault.

Launched into deep space in 1990, the large, long orbit telescope is packed with instruments like cameras, spectrographs and interferometers to clear up mysteries of the universe. But now NASA has been forced to place one of it’s prize assets into ‘safe mode’ due to the malfunction of a gyroscope used to balance and navigate the $2.5 billion telescope.

In a statement NASA allayed fears by saying the telescope can still carry out scientific operations with one gyro but that activities onboard the orbiter had been suspended to give engineers a chance to fix the fault.

N. Korea’s Kim invites Pope Francis to Pyongyang – report

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has invited the pontiff to visit the country’s capital, Yonhap reported. The last time that Pope Francis visited neighboring South Korea, the North ‘marked’ the visit with a missile launch.

The South Korean presidential office revealed on Tuesday that Kim will “ardently welcome the Pope if he visits Pyongyang,” according to Yonhap, citing spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom. South Korean President Moon Jae-in is himself scheduled to meet the pontiff during his trip to Europe next week. He will avail of the opportunity to deliver the message from the North.

Pope Francis has never been to North Korea and only visited the southern part of the peninsula once, in 2014. On that occasion, Pyongyang made its presence felt by firing three short-range missiles an hour before the first papal visit to Seoul in 25 years. The missiles landed in the sea.

The Pope has long urged the two Koreas to make peace. While tensions flared in the region, bringing the US and North Korea to the brink of military confrontation, the pontiff warned that a “widespread war” would destroy “a good part of humanity.” He also urged world leaders to mediate in the crisis and find a diplomatic solution.

Ahead of the historic Singapore summit between the US and North Korean leaders, the Pope prayed that the meeting would lead to “a future of peace for the Korean Peninsula and the whole world.”

Ukraine ammunitions depot rocked by huge explosions, 10,000 people evacuated (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Up to three blasts per second rocked a munitions depot near the city of Chernigov in northern Ukraine. More than 10,000 people were evacuated from the area, which was put on lockdown for air and land travel.

The first reports of explosions at the arsenal in the town of Ichnia came in at about 3.30am. Five depots of the arsenal were still engulfed by the inferno in the afternoon.

The powerful blasts smashed doors and windows in nearby areas, according to locals’ comments on social media. Terrified people have been posting images of the night sky lit up by the apparent explosions.

VIDEO: Bridge collapses on world’s longest railway linking Russia’s west & east

A motorway bridge has collapsed on top of the Trans-Siberian Railway in the Russian Far East, just as a truck was driving on the bridge and a train had passed underneath it. CCTV footage of the collapse has appeared online.

Two sections of the motorway bridge in the Amur region of Russia collapsed as a truck was passing it, according to the local emergencies ministry. The driver was hospitalized with a broken shin and shattered foot. His life is not in danger.
