LOU BARLETTAS BROTHER 187d

Former President Reagan had a lot of friends in the Secret Service but none closer than his horse riding agent, John R. Barletta.

Their friendship started early in his presidency when, after first riding with Barletta at the Reagan Ranch in Santa Barbara, Calif., the Gipper told Barletta’s boss, “Well, you finally got me a good one.”

Over 17 years, he protected the president and first lady at the ranch, in Washington, and overseas, and on his retirement, Reagan and Nancy Reagan wrote a letter that described Barletta as preparing to “ride off into the sunset — shedding your ear piece, the dark suit and those ‘creative’ neckties for that perfect pair of tattered cowboy boots that tell the proud stories of long ago rides.”

He even wrote a book about his days with Reagan, titled Riding with Reagan.

Barletta, born in 1944, died July 3. His death was announced by the Young America’s Foundation, which operates the Reagan Ranch where he was a board member and regular story-teller.

In their remembrance, YAF said, “Perhaps now we can imagine the two of them together again, riding into the sunset, each in that perfect pair of tattered cowboy boots, leaving it up to us to continue to tell the stories of their long ago rides.”
