US, Turkey Reach "Secret Deal" To Release Pastor Brunson, Lira Surges
The Turkish Lira spiked to 2-month highs (and faded a little) following headlines that North Carolina pastor Andrew Brunson is expected to be released in coming days after two years of detention in Turkey.
NBC News reports that The White House expects North Carolina pastor Andrew Brunson to be released by the Turkish government and returned to the U.S. in coming days, two years after he was detained, according to two senior administration officials and another person briefed on the matter.
Under an agreement senior Trump administration officials recently reached with Turkey, Brunson is supposed to be released after certain charges against him are dropped at his next court hearing, currently scheduled for Friday, the senior administration officials and a person briefed on the matter said.
The details of the deal are unclear, but those familiar with the discussions said it includes a commitment by the U.S. to ease economic pressure on Turkey.
However, the Trump administration, isn't fully confident that Turkey will follow through with the Brunson agreement because Ankara was close to a commitment to release him several months ago but did not, one senior administration official said.
"We continue to believe Pastor Brunson is innocent, and the hearing on Friday is another opportunity for the Turkish judicial system to free an American citizen," a third senior administration official said.
This headline spiked the Lira but even that is fading from two-month high stops (perhaps reflecting the administration's doubts)..

ANOTHER Google executive demands dismantling America to stop conservatives; announces desire to âabolish the Senateâ
One thing Leftists are good at is letting Americans see them for who they really are, which is especially helpful in an election year.
The Democratic Party and its sycophantic supporters have let it be known in no uncertain terms in the age of POTUS Donald Trump and the era of constitutionalism that he is ushering in, that they have no use for our founding principles of government. Thatâs largely because they are out of power and cannot win it back through established means because they are bereft of ideas and morally and politically bankrupt.
Late last week, after Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, announced she would support then-Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaughâs confirmation â which guaranteed he would receive enough votes to be seated â an executive from Google tweeted his disdain for the process as well as joining in an effort to bribe a sitting U.S. senator, which is supposed to be a crime.
âAbolish the Senate,â Google Ventures partner Ken Norton tweeted.

âNearly Allâ of the Pentagonâs New Weapons Systems Are Vulnerable to Hacking
A handful of costly military satellites and ground stations were deployed between 2012 and 2016 so they could pass secure messages between the U.S. Armyâs portable radios and cellular networks around the globe. But when a team of Navy hackers tested it in 2015 and 2016, the system turned out not to be so secure.
It had more than 1,000 cyber vulnerabilities, half of which had âa high potential of giving system access to an intruder,â a 2016 Pentagon testing report said.
The network, known as the Mobile User Objective System, turns out to be just one of many new major Pentagon weapons systems found vulnerable to hacking. A new report from auditors at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) concluded on Oct. 9 that ânearly allâ of the weapons systems in the Pentagonâs $1.7 trillion dollar purchasing pipeline have glaring cybersecurity holes.
Hereâs the problem: The Pentagon and other federal agencies for the past few years have been intensifying their efforts to protect their own computer networks from hacking â after some spectacular breaches, including a hack of sensitive government personnel files in 2015 and Edward Snowdenâs theft of NSA files in 2013.
But the military hasnât worked as hard over the past decade to protect its software-dependent weapons systems from hacking, according to the GAO.
The consequences in a crisis or military conflict could be grave, since cyber breaches involving weapons systems could in theory give an enemy the opportunity to make the weapons misfire or fail. Itâs not the first time this warning has been issued â at least a half-dozen military studies since the 1990s have sounded alarms that Pentagon systems were becoming enticing hacking targets, the report said.
Only in 2014 did the Pentagon begin to routinely check for cyber vulnerabilities in new weapons systems, the GAO noted, and many systems havenât been tested at all. âUntil recently, DOD [Department of Defense] did not prioritize cybersecurity in weapon systems acquisitions,â the report said. âDOD is in the early stage of trying to understand how to apply cybersecurity to weapon systems.â
The GAO, which serves as Congressâs watchdog group reviewing the work of government agencies, conducted the study at the request of the Senate Armed Services Committee. The report does not describe any vulnerabilities in specific weapons systems, noting that classification rules protect details of what was found during testing. The testing the GAO reviewed covered some of the final analysis of new systems before the military puts them to use.
The report points to multiple instances where military hackers testing the cybersecurity of weapons systems, called red teams, managed to get into platforms in seconds because of lax security.
During one test a red team guessed a key password in nine seconds. And in several other instances, weapons makers used publicly available software in their systems without changing the default passwords.
The report also highlighted particular vulnerabilities associated with older weapons systems, some of which might be connected to newer ones meant to be more secure. âUntil around 2014, there was a general lack of emphasis on cybersecurity throughout the weapon systems acquisition process,â the report said. âIf attackers can access one of those [older] systems, they may be able to reach any of the others through the connecting networks.â
