Rep. Ryan completes final trip to Afghanistan
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - House Speaker Paul Ryan completed a two-day trip in Afghanistan today.
Alongside Rep. Mac Thornberry of Texas, Ryan met with American soldiers to thank them for their service.
The representatives also met with American and Afghani officials to discuss the 17-year-old war, according to a press release.
The diplomatic trip will be Ryan’s last, he said, as his term ends in 2019 and he has stated he will not run for reelection.
“Fighting terrorism in this region remains in our nation’s vital interest and it is clear the current momentum of our military campaign is underpinning our diplomatic efforts to set the conditions for reconciliation," Ryan said.
Ryan visited several U.S. bases near Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan. His meetings included one with the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani.
Ryan’s visit comes after Congress passed a funding bill that will increase U.S. military operations in Afghanistan
