i gave it a shot, but it's far from a final/complete answer… the question of how to be at least somewhat nice/show compassion to evil/fucked up people without getting fucked over remains, and it's not an easy one…
here's another idea: one chance a day.
you start each day with a blank slate for person x, reach out in some way (or just go about your regular interactions, depending) that gives them a choice, to be assholes or not, and if they blow it, you stop there/refuse to engage anymore…
start over next day…
(just an idea, it really depends on the people. it's great you're trying to be nice, but really, don't endure abuse)

as i said, a better selection… i haven't perused our fren's work that much but everytime i looked it's mostly a jumble of waste. Sure, think i don't get it, i don't mind.
For a moment there started to be patterns, and attempts at an esthetic in the mix, and i was glad because that seemed to herald an evolution, that our montageanon was progressing… not so much today. Maybe it comes and goes.
