Khashoggi became the editor-in-chief of the Saudi daily Al Watan for a short period, less than two months, in 2003.[3][19] His tenure as editor-in-chief lasted for just 52 days.[20][18] Khashoggi was fired in May 2003 by the Saudi ministry of information because he had allowed a columnist to criticise the Islamic scholar Ibn Taymiyya (1263 - 1328), who is considered the founding father of Wahhabism – a movement that the Muslim Brotherhood has always been at odds with.[21] This incident led to Khashoggi's dubious reputation in the West as a liberal progressive.[22]
After the firing, Khashoggi went to London in voluntary exile. There he joined the Al Faisal's team as an adviser.[23] He then served as a media aide to Prince Turki Al Faisal, while the latter was Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States.[24]
