Crime pays (if you're in the US government)
Perhaps you're old enough to remember this tag line from the 1930s radio dramatization of The Shadow. Or perhaps, like me, you spent your childhood listening to "Those Old Radio Shows" on your local radio station before going to bed every night. Or perhaps you're only familiar with Woody Allen's retort that "I think crime pays. The hours are good, you travel a lot."
Take John McCain, for example. Or should that be Saint John McCain, the newly-anointed Patron Saint of the #Resistance? You know, the rabidly bloodthirsty warmongering neocon who the mouthpiece lapdog fake news lying establishment bankster-funded corporate dinosaur lamestream media fell over themselves to hail as one of the greatest statesman who ever lived after his recent death?
Now there are many reprehensible incidents from McCain's ignominious career that were studiously ignored in the torrent of retch-inducing encomia that accompanied his passing, but for our purposes today one scandal in particular stands out. Back in the 1980s a scandal erupted around Charles H. Keating, Jr., Chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, which had come under scrutiny from government regulators for its part in the savings and loan crisis.
Keating had responded to the unwelcome attention of government regulators by doing what any other businessman in his situation would do: attempt to buy off the regulators. (After all, this is precisely what the government regulation trap has been designed for.) And so he spent $1.3 million lining the pockets of five US Senators (the "Keating Five") to help him get the regulators off his back. They all happily accepted his money and-wouldn't you know?-the regulators did back off their investigation of Lincoln.
The plot finally blew up after two years of sporadic coverage in the press and it kicked off a Senate Ethics Committee investigation into the actions of the five senators who had taken Keating's bribes. Naturally (for those of you who don't know the punchline yet), one of those senators was none other than Saint McCain himself.
Of course, the Senate Ethics Committee eventually cleared McCain of wrongdoing (while chiding him for "poor judgement"), but it was widely reported at the time that McCain had improperly leaked details to the press about his fellow senators in order to throw the blame on them (and thus exonerate himself). While that's bad enough, the real crime came when he lied about these leaks under oath.

Angela Merkel's Bavarian allies suffer historic election losses
The Christian Social Union, which has ruled Bavarian politics since World War II, had its lowest result since 1950
Angela Merkel’s Bavarian allies lost their absolute majority in a regional election, signalling a voter backlash against long-ruling parties that is also likely to have fallout in the German chancellor’s government.
The ruling Christian Social Union, which has dominated Bavarian politics in the decades since World War II, took 35.5 percent of the vote on Sunday, its lowest result since 1950, according to projections by broadcaster ARD based on exit polls.
Voters migrated to the Green party which more than doubled its support to as much as 19 percent and the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party, or AfD, which won its first seats in the state parliament with 11 percent.

India and Russia may be partners, but can they find common ground on China?
Putin’s visit to India saw the low-key conclusion of a US$5.4 billion arms deal to appease the US – but as Beijing increases its regional influence, questions loom over the future direction of relations between New Delhi and Moscow
The summit meeting last week between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin was an effort by New Delhi to allay Moscow’s growing apprehension that its long-standing strategic partner and largest arms buyer has been lost forever to the United States.
In concluding a US$5.43 billion deal for five regiments of Russia’s S-400 Triumf long-range air defence system, New Delhi signalled that, notwithstanding the growing US-India strategic and military partnership, India’s strategic balance and its dependence on Russian submarine and missile technologies requires it to continue buying arms from Moscow.

Muslim Inbreeding is a Huge Problem–And People Don't Want to Talk About It
Marriage between cousins remains rampant in much of the Muslim world. And the results are truly tragic.
A Google search of “Islam Inbreeding” will lead one to the case of Salha al-Hefthi, a 17-year-old Saudi girl who was profiled by the New York Times in 2003. Ms. Hefthi’s parents told her how lucky she was to be marrying someone from her own tribe, her paternal uncle’s son—her first cousin. The couple had two healthy boys but their third child, a girl, was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic disorder that usually is fatal. The couple would have three more children born with the disease.
Ms. Hefthi told the Times she had no idea inbreeding often leads to genetic defects. This is not uncommon in Saudi Arabia, which is why genetic disorders are so rampant.
“Saudi Arabia is a living genetics laboratory,” Dr. Stephen R. Schroeder, executive director of the Prince Salman Center for Disability Research, told the Times. “Here you can study 10 families to study genetic disorders, where you would need 10,000 families to study genetic disorders in the United States.”
But it’s not just Saudi Arabia, or the Middle East for that matter. Inbreeding is surprisingly common in many Muslim nations and communities, evidence shows.
