Marie-Antoinette's Veil

Many people ask what became of Queen Marie-Antoinette's clothes and jewels after the fall of the monarchy. People particularly want to know what became of her wedding gown. Like many of the queen's gowns which were designed for special occasions, the wedding gown was probably made into a set of vestments and donated to the Church. A veil, which may have been worn at her weddding, later graced the head of the niece of Tsar Nicholas II, Princess Irina, when she was married to Prince Felix Youssopov. As Felix wrote in his memoirs:

We were quite overwhelmed with gifts: the most gorgeous jewels as well as the simplest and most touching presents from our peasants…. Irina's wedding dress was magnificent; it was of white satin embroidered in silver with a long train. Her veil, which had belonged to Marie-Antoinette was held by a tiara of rock crystal and diamonds.

At the Youssoupov palaces, bowls of tumble-polished precious stones were placed on the tables for guests to play with. In his memoirs Prince Felix wrote that a favourite sport consisted of seeing how many could be gathered in the fingers of one hand and sometimes the more dexterous players were allowed to keep them.

I just finished reading "Consuelo and Alva Vanderbilt: The Story of a Daughter and a Mother In the Gilded Age", and I was really surprised to find out that the 'American Duchess' had visited Russia and sat beside the Tsar at the Bal des Palmiers! Apparently she found him a 'gentle, quiet little man', and they discussed matters of government over dinner (interestingly, as Nicholas was known to hate doing so. Consuelo wrote in her memoirs that she would never forget the conversation. She was also asked to dance a mazurka by Grand Duke Mikhail (she was taught a different version from the one he knew- so he replied 'Never mind, I'll do the steps.')

When one visits the Marble House at Newport Rhode Island which is just one of the 5 homes Consuelos parents shuttled between.One can easily see why Consuelo was not really dazzled by the splendour of the Russian court.. Millicent Duchess too living at Sutherland (now Lancaster House) on the mall when not at her husbands various country homes (they had at that time 1,250,000 acres..) herself could hold her own even among the Youssoupoffs or Shouvalovs.
