More than 80 percent of F-35s cleared for flight after fuel tube problem

The Pentagon last week grounded the Lockheed Martin-made aircraft to examine the fuel tubes within the engines, made separately by Pratt & Whitney. The fuel tubes, found in all F-35 variants, were suspected to be the cause of an F-35B crash on Sept. 28. near the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, S.C.

The program office said it is working closely with the military services “to prioritize fuel tube replacements using the current spares inventory,” and with Pratt & Whitney to rapidly procure more parts “to minimize the overall repair timeline for the remaining jets.”

The current inventory of spare fuel tubes “will restore about half of the impacted jets to flight operations, and the remaining aircraft are expected to be cleared for flight over the coming weeks.”

The F-35 program is the most expensive weapons program in history and has received criticism for having had numerous issues including cost overruns and various technical problems.

“More than 1500 suppliers are on the F-35 program and this is an isolated incident which is quickly being addressed and fixed,” the program office said.

“Safety is our primary goal, and we will continue to take every measure to ensure safe operations while we execute our mission.”

Trump admin could use military bases to export coal, gas

The Trump administration is considering using military bases to accommodate export facilities for coal or natural gas, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke told the Associated Press.

Zinke said the strategy is being considered as a way to thwart opposition by California, Oregon and Washington leaders to allowing export terminals in their states to sell coal or gas to Asia.

“I respect the state of Washington and Oregon and California,” Zinke told AP. “But also, it’s in our interest for national security and our allies to make sure that they have access to affordable energy commodities.”

Zinke said that may involve using “some of our naval facilities, some of our federal facilities on the West Coast.”

Democrats torch Trump for floating 'rogue killers' to blame for missing journalist

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, said that by floating that "rogue killers" were to blame Trump had been enlisted as a "PR agent" for Saudi Arabia.

"Been hearing the ridiculous 'rogue killers' theory was where the Saudis would go with this. Absolutely extaordinary they were able to enlist the President of the United States as their PR agent to float it," Murphy said in a tweet.

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), another member of the panel, added that Trump's rhetoric was "insulting."

"President Trump’s response to Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance reveals a man more willing to trust authoritarian leaders than reliable intelligence," Kaine said.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), the chairman of the Senate Democratic campaign arm, said that Trump's suggestion "defied reality."

"Orders must have come from the top. The U.S. must not be complicit in an effort to cover-up this heinous crime," he said.

Trump Jr. to stump in Indiana for Pence’s brother and governor hopeful

Donald Trump Jr. plans to visit Indiana next week for a rally in support of Senate candidate Mike Braun (R) and congressional candidate Greg Pence, the older brother of the vice president, the Indiana GOP announced Monday.

The president's eldest son will be joined by his girlfriend and former Fox News host Kimberly Guilfoyle in Indianapolis on Oct. 22, as the two continue their series of campaign stops in the weeks before next month's midterm elections.

The two will be stumping for Braun, a businessman and former state representative who is attempting to unseat Sen. Joe Donnelly (D).

Donnelly is among the most vulnerable incumbent senators up for re-election next month, and the national GOP has lined up behind Braun. President Trump held a rally in Indiana in August, and Vice President Pence has visited his home state multiple times in recent weeks to boost GOP candidates.

A RealClearPolitics average of polls in the race shows Donnelly with a 4 point lead, and the Cook Political Report rates the election as a "toss-up."
