Quneitra crossing with occupied Syrian Golan opens officially, UNDOF deploys in their former positions

The Syrian flag was hoisted Monday over Quneitra crossing with the occupied Syrian Golan after nearly five years since it was closed as a result of the terrorist organizations’ taking over it.

Quneitra Governor Hammam Dbayat said in a statement to SANA that the official opening of the Quneitra crossing on Monday came after the great victory achieved by the Syrian Arab Army against terrorism and clearing the province of the terrorist organizations that closed the crossing for about five years following the withdrawal of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force in the occupied Syrian Golan (UNDOF) from the area.

President al-Assad stresses to al-Jaafari importance of upgrading historic Syrian-Iraqi relations

President al-Assad stressed that the victories achieved in combating terrorism in Syria and Iraq are in common because the field in the two counties are one, where blood of the heroes who achieved these victories in both countries is mingled.

Minister al-Jaafari pointed out that the regional and international circumstances are changing positively towards what is going on in Syria and Iraq due to the legitimacy of the cause defended by the two brotherly countries, which requires action for achieving more victories and promoting them for upgrading the two countries and the region in general.

Implication of creating a modern integrated management of the Syrian air space

The new Russian system of integrated management of data on the Syrian battlefield, is not uniquely conceived to prevent Israeli aggressions. It also makes it impossible for the United States and France to provide air support for their illegal bases in Syria. This is why, anticipating defeat, Ambassador James Jeffrey has called for US occupation forces to be withdrawn.

Under international law, the defense of the Syrian territory, even the parts occupied by anti-government, separatist terrorist groups, is the responsibility of the Syrian government. The same applies to Syria’s territorial waters and its air space. Russia has been invited by the legitimate government of Syria to support the Syrian army in its fight against terrorists. But, even in this context, Russia is not arrogating to itself the right to replace the Syrian government as the holder of the sovereign right to defend its territory and its air space.

In the past, going beyond the limits set by international rules and UN decisions, the USA and its allies (NATO in particular), have proceeded to a military occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, and have imposed a no-fly zone over Libya and Yugoslavia.

In contrast, the Russian contingency in Syria is not an occupation force and accordingly, has not received from the Russian President, the mandate to occupy the Syrian territory or to create a no-fly zone over the entire country, even though it has the operational capacity to do so.

Amnesty International: US-led coalition’s rejection to admit killing civilians in Raqqa terrible

France Press quoted Amnesty International in statement as saying on Monday that hundreds of civilians were killed in the air strikes launched by the coalition, adding that the insistence on refusing to acknowledge the large number of civilian killed and the destruction caused to Raqqa is an insult to the victims.

The statement said that the coalition acknowledged the killing of only one hundred civilians, yet its unwillingness to carry out its duty towards them is terrible.

The statement affirmed that it is necessary to know the reasons which led to the killing of hundreds of persons and investigate the used weapons in the strikes and the accuracy of the intelligence given to the coalition prior to launching the airstrikes.

US Lawmakers Dismiss Trump’s ‘Rogue Killers’ Theory of Khashoggi’s Disappearance

American elected officials harshly criticized US President Donald Trump’s theory that “rogue killers” could be behind the disappearance of Saudi Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi earlier in October. Khashoggi is widely believed to have been killed at the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Trump told reporters Monday morning after a phone call with Saudi Arabia's King Salman, "I don't want to get into his mind, but it sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers. Who knows?" Trump added that the king was "very, very strong" in denying knowledge of Khashoggi's whereabouts. "We're gonna try getting to the bottom of it very soon," the president said.

The "rogue killers" remark was widely condemned as a dubious hypothesis as to the fate of the Saudi journalist, who was a US resident. Critics noted that Trump had failed to cite specific reasons to support his idea.

"Blaming ‘rogue killers' for brutal Khashoggi murder makes our president look like a Saudi apologist living in an alternative reality — once again disregarding facts & demeaning American values," Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) tweeted Monday.

"Been hearing the ridiculous ‘rogue killers' theory was where the Saudis would go with this," said Sen. Chris Murphy, a fellow Democrat for Connecticut, adding that it is "absolutely extraordinary they were able to enlist the President of the United States as their PR agent to float it."

It's not clear how the supposed rogue assailants would have been able to gain access to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, nor how they'd be able to smuggle a body out.

No-deal Brexit is ‘more likely than ever,’ Donald Tusk tells EU leaders

European Council President Donald Tusk has said that a ‘no deal’ Brexit is “more likely than ever before” and that it must be prepared for.

Tusk made the comment in a letter to EU leaders ahead of meetings scheduled for 17 and 18 October. “We must prepare the EU for a no-deal scenario, which is more likely than ever before,” Tusk wrote in the letter which acknowledged that the Brexit negotiations had “proven to be more complicated than some may have expected”.

Despite the tough situation, however, Tusk said that EU leaders should “remain hopeful” as there is still “good will” on all sides.

He also said the fact that the EU is preparing for a no-deal scenario “must not, under any circumstances, lead us away from making every effort to reach the best agreement possible” for all involved.

The UK government's handling of the Brexit negotiations has been repeatedly criticized by EU leaders and political analysts. British Prime Minister Theresa May has played down criticisms of her Chequers plan, however, suggesting that it all amounts to negotiation tactics from Brussels.

The Chequers plan, which May was expecting would receive a warmer response from Brussels, would see the UK stay in the single market for goods but opt out of production regulations. EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier has said that would give the UK a "huge competitive edge" over EU companies.

The border between Northern Ireland the Republic of Ireland remains biggest sticking point in negotiations. Barnier has said the EU is open to a deal in which the entire UK – not just Northern Ireland – would remain within the Customs Union, eliminating the need for any border checks. But hard-Brexit factions have strongly opposed any extension of the customs union after Brexit.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has criticized May's latest statement about the contentious border issue, saying the whole thing was “beginning to feel like Groundhog Day.” May will meet EU leaders on Wednesday with both her Brexit plans and potentially her political leadership on the line.

The 9/11 atrocity was the first of many terrorist attacks, each succeeded by the dramatic extension of draconian state powers at the expense of civil liberties, backed up with the projection of military force in regions identified as hotspots harbouring terrorists. Yet there is little indication that this tried and tested formula has done anything to reduce the danger. If anything, we appear to be locked into a deepening cycle of violence with no clear end in sight.
