Dr. Carlos D. Bustamante is an internationally recognized leader in the application of data science and genomics technology to problems in medicine, agriculture, and biology. He received his Ph.D. in Biology and MS in Statistics from Harvard University (2001), was on the faculty at Cornell University (2002-9), and was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2010. He is currently Professor of Biomedical Data Science, Genetics, and (by courtesy) Biology at Stanford University.

As part of Stanford's School of Medicine and the new Department of Biomedical Data Science (BDS), the Bustamante Lab is a powerful force for scientific innovation, collaboration, and change. We work on a variety of organisms and model systems ranging from humans and other primates to domesticated plants and animals. Much of our research is at the interface of computational biology, mathematical genetics, genetic anthropology, and evolutionary genomics, and focuses on developing statistical, computational, biomedical, and genomic resources for enabling trans- and multi-ethnic genome-wide association and medical sequencing studies of complex biomedical traits.

Dr. Bustamante is the Founding Director for the Stanford Center for Computational, Evolutionary, and Human Genomics, Founding Chair and Professor of the Department of Biomedical Data Science and a Professor of Genetics and (by courtesy) Biology for the Stanford University School of Medicine. He received a B.A. (1997), M.A. (2001), and Ph.D. (2001) from Harvard University. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford (2001–2002). His scientific articles have appeared in such journals as Nature, Science, Molecular Biology and Evolution, PLoS Genetics, and PNAS.
