‘Destroying All Safeguards’: Trump Attacks Oil Pipeline Regulations
The Trump administration may have ordered an advisory government agency, the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, to cut back environmental regulations related to chemical and oil pipeline safety. Instead of mandatory regulations designed to keep workers and the public safe, those regulations will become voluntary suggestions.
Scott Edwards, co-director of the Food & Water Justice project at Food & Water Watch, joined Radio Sputnik's Loud & Clear Monday to discuss how the agency is suffering under the Trump administration.
Since 1998, "this program has always existed as a sort of advisory board. Some folks have credited it to making good, protective recommendations to agencies that can pass regulations. They have [had] a staff that is dedicated to estimating these things and making recommendations in the past, but even that minor role is being gutted these days," Edwards told hosts John Kiriakou and Brian Becker.
