Jewish people were waiting for a Messiah to appear, but failed to recognize Jesus as the Messiah because they were expecting something different. The religious elders of the day Pharisees/Sadducees had embraced a Babylonian religion (Talmud) which had nothing to do with God's law. It was a system of rules by which NO MAN could follow, and was used as a control mechanism to subjugate the people.
